Br’er Rabbit: (politely) How do you do, miss? Lauren: (screams, then picked up a big stick) Stay away! Br’er Fox: Whoa, whoa. Put down that stick. Br’er Bear: We’re not gonna hurt you. Do you know who we are? Br’er Rabbit: You ever heard stories about us? Lauren: (dropped the big stick) Wait a minute. Is that you? Br’er Fox: Yes, ma’am. Lauren: (shook Br’er Rabbit’s hand) Br’er Rabbit. (Shook Fox’s hand) Br’er Fox. (Shook Br’er Bear’s hand) And Br’er Bear. Br’er Bear: That’s right. Br’er Rabbit: (politely) What’s your name? Lauren: I’m Lauren. Br’er Rabbit: Mighty glad to meet you, Lauren. Br’er Fox: That’s a nice name. Br’er Bear: You wanna be friends? We won’t start any fights. Lauren: I would love to.

The music, the world that Uncle Remus steps in and the characters that go by and by was always my escape. It is so dear to me. I used to think that if you went far enough, you would find this world and cartoon characters would sing, hum and greet you.

I always wondered why so many big bands had a guitar player. Certainly is drowned out by all the brass. Possibly it is to add to the "wall of sound" to fill in sound gaps

Always loved this side too...nice balance on the mix (one of my criteria for a good stereo recreation is how close it sounds to what I'd imagine a contemporaneous release would have, and this certainly fits that bill...thanks much

Fun fact: Ian Whitcomb was once a DJ at "The World Famous KROQ" 106.7 in their early days, then KCRW, later KPCC. He had a fascinating career, including producing Mae West's final album "Great Balls Of Fire" (a rock LP!) "You Turn Me On" peaked at #8 in July 1965 and was the first Irish-produced record to reach the US charts - but did not chart in his native Britain.

Fellow Texan Roy Head's only hit. But what a wonder it was! Back then a 2nd verse would have scared the label by making the song "too long". Too bad. If the song is great and not repetitious, who cares how long it runs besides sales departments.

My prayers have finally been answered! Don't know how I missed this as a subscriber, but no worries. This peaked at #8 on 50,000 watt KLIF 1190 Dallas 40 Star Survey in 1966 or '67, and this is THE version we all know in the South. All of Gordon McLendon's stations played this, and how it only peaked at #55 originally is a baffling mystery. When Neil signed to UNI/MCA in 1970, Bang Records reissued "Solitary Man" dripping with a new string arrangement that made me wanna puke. It did chart higher that time (#21), and the stereo string mix exists only on the "Double Gold" hits package. Bang also got Neil an appearance on Mannix (S1E4 "The Many Deaths Of St. Christopher") where he performed "Solitary Man" acoustically as well as "The Boat That I Row". In one scene as he performs the unrecorded song "Raisin' Cain", a fight naturally breaks out where Joe is slugged, crashing across a bar table, and Neil quips to Mannix laying on the stage floor "Do you mind man if I finish the set by myself?" LOL [FUN FACT: Buffalo Springfield also performed portions of two songs live , "Mr. Soul" and "Bluebird in S1E7 "Warning: Live Blueberries" in a couple of hippie club scenes as well. Recordings of these two live performances were either lost, or not done.]

The expanded CD of Surrealistic Pillow that has the stereo & mono LP plus the dedicated single mixes on it is the bomb. It proves your point about the superior sounding single mix. The industry spends lots of money when marketing and supporting a single, so it makes no sense the single mixes from days gone by are hard to find on CD. It's all about selling the whole album. At least the UK is a more "singles centric" nation.

This track never bugged me after hearing on the radio forever. HOWEVER, I challenge Twodawgzz or Tiger or someone to fix "Darling Be Home Soon". As a kid (like the one mentioned in the comments) I hated the way the strings drowned out John Sebastian when they came in near the last verse. You could barely hear him. THAT should have never been released that way...even the mono single mix is effed up. I believe this one is the track someone erased part of the tape and Sebastian was all p!ssed off about having to redo the session, though it made for a greater performance IMHO.

This goes with Spencer-Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" where the US version sounds like a party compared to the UK undubbed mix. However, the UK version is a clearer and more transparent recording than UA put out here. Either 2Dawgzz or someone else posted a clean, longer US stereo version that is incredible.

I believe even Eric Burdon prefers the US single version. This is just more haunting, and the UK version sounds to me like a demo, though I understand the wrong version was originally sent to MGM. Sometimes a mistake works out very well!
