Glad I found this video. Just built something in the same fashion after watching this. Only difference is I used a dipole for the main element and built the radials very similarly. Worked fantastic and had perfect SWR on both VHF and UHF.

Hi Dave -- I have built this inverted "V" dipole and it has been working great. But over the past few days we have had a lot of rain. When I first put up the antenna, the SWR was 1.3 to 1.4 across the CB band. Last night, the SWR jumped to 2.5 to 3.0 -- I presume because something got wet ? How do you "weatherproof" the feed point and the coax connection on this type of antenna ?

At around :11:00, he talks about the radiation pattern of the dipole. Actually it's not like an 8 (it looks like 8 if you slice the 3D radiation pattern), but rather it has a doughnut-like 3D pattern because the dipole radiates around the axis. You can imagine the shape you will get by revolving the 8 shape around the axis of the dipole.

Hi Dave -- excellent video! I'm building this myself right now, following your video. Question -- you start with two 10" pieces of wire, but on the center terminal of the SO-239, after wrapping it and soldering you cut off about 1" of that wire. So, you'll end up with uneven lengths of wire coming out -- do you then have to compensate for that with one of the legs of the "V" being 1" longer than the other so that the overall length of both is the same ? Thanks.

Glad to see this concept works. I had envisioned something almost identical for my own needs and was certain that it would be fine. Don't worry, I am a degree'd and experienced mechanical engineer... and a pretty decent fabricator too. I should share a video of my existing crank-up folding tower...

Very practical upcycling in a useful application! If only a less tedious method of assembly could devised. I saw a guy who soldered together 303 size 'tin' cans to form a rather tall vertical that also worked well.

@johnmanz3397 I would recommend using a bulkhead connector with a square mounting flange; so that it can be mounted outside on the pvc end cap allowing the full length of thread on the so-239 connector to be available for the pl-259 to properly seat. The one wire would solder to the center connector of the so-239 and the other wire would attach to one of the small mounting screws for the so-239 bulkhead connector.

This all sounds very useful. I’ve noticed that each band is twice the previous one: 40, 80, and 160. Is there anything special about that? Could I use a similar approach to make a tri-bander for 40/60/80? *73 de AF6AS*

Dave, a full length fan dipole would perform better than a trapped or loaded dipole AND is easier to tune, assuming space is available.

Hello Dave, great job, and good job on your presentation, however; I guess no one believes in using dummy loads anymore? I've been licensed since 1975 and was always taught to listen twice before transmitting. It sounds like you were transmitting over another station. With everybody these days doing their best to run full lrgsl limits, ignoring FCC Rules on using only the power needed to maintain communications, we QRP operators need to be extra careful not to transmit over other stations. Dummy loads are always needed during the initial test trails. Just my 2 cents sir. But great job, and thank you for sharing. --73-- Jim K7QI/ Z81A

Thanks for sharing this idea of a combined dipole for both bands.🙂 I am a newbie and I am building a similar antenna. Can anyone give me some advice regarding adjusting the length of the 2 combined dipols? I mean - can they just be adjusted each one (using a Nano VNA or something like that) on their own or do they influence each other so that a "special procedure" or order should be applied to get the SWR to a good level on both bands?
@Ratchet23 ай бұрын
Adjust as a unit as they are dependent on each other. Use the Nano VNA for best results as it will display the impedance as well. Tune close to 50ohms as possible which will give best SWR. If you don’t have a VNA you could get by tuning for lowest SWR in a pinch.

Great work BUT! The tower would have to be much taller for me (me) to justify the whole operation. 48 feet is not enough juice for the squeeze, so-to-speak. Maybe I am just a jealous fool, not sure.
