If I remember right, about 3 miles round trip, uphill there, downhill back. I have heard that public access is now blocked in 2024

A number of years ago we rode snowmobiles over the roofs with almost 10ft of snow. We explored the radar base and old silos. So amazing views. Goes back to an era that we had a huge military

Once a week we have to pick up litter that is left behind. This spot you are on is private property and ATVs are supposed to stick to trails! There is no parking lot for a reason.

Thank you for your concern and sorry that some people ruin it for others and leave behind trash. Is it your property? It was not posted. We are respectful of others and the environment. I also pick up other peoples trash! Yesterday I picked up 2 balloons and some bottles! ATVs are allowed on roads in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, just not US41 or state highways.
@sandragayk67143 ай бұрын
@@DennisFamAdventures Thank you for your nice reply. ATVs are allowed on roads only to get to the nearest trail according to our county ordinance. You are absolutely right about a few wrecking things for the others. I know the majority of ATV drivers are respectful because I once served on a committee with members of the ATV Club who were very nice and also somewhat frustrated by others who don't follow the rules. Their club goes thru the remote trails 2 X a year picking up litter and making repairs to the trails, all as volunteers.

My dad took us through here when we were kids a few times. He raced horses in Kinross, and we would go to all the .u.p. attractions in between race days and end the trip by going to Mackinaw Island. He would drive us through the old abandoned military housing subdivisions in Jackson Mi. I thought hat was crazy as a kid, cuz they were huge empty subdivisions. That was all back in the 80s. I always wondered how the hell he knew about these places.

I was stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB, twice. 1971 to 1973. Second time was 1976-80 as Security Police Law Enforcement Patrolman and then Flight Chief. Breaks my heart to see how the base looks. Every year the 410th Security Police Squadron come to the area for a reunion.

Thanks so much for this post. I was a SAGE radar Airman at K.I. Sawyer AFB, Mi. late 1962 to late 1963. Calumet, Sault St. Marie, Alpena and other area radar sites fed the radar data to K.I. for consolidation into one large defense picture for NORAD. Our SAGE Direction Center at K.I. was closed in 1963 with Detroit Sector picking up our responsibility. I was later stationed at a similar radar station outside of Pittsburgh, Pa (Oakdale). Cheers -- Dan -- USAF RET.

america was very paranoid after ww2. in michigan there was this place, gwinn, kinross, ( where they had planes go up everyday with atomic bombs) and oscoda. all closed now. there really wasn't any need for them then. out west there are empty missile silos where atomic missiles were set up ready to be fired at any time. as a child i remember having drills in school what to do during atomic attack. and air raid sirens in flint going of on saturdays to test them and people building air raid bunkers. yes america was very paranoid.

That’s a cool spot. I remember the first time I drove over those bridges, I was a little scared haha. Our family far was closer to 41 off M38. If you ever have a chance go check out Bonanza Falls down in Ontonogon. They aren’t huge but it’s a really nice area to go check out with the family in the summer months.

There’s so much awesome history in the Upper Peninsula. You can go driving in the woods almost anywhere and stumble across something pretty cool up here.

I was stationed there from 1982 to its closure in 1995. Originally assigned to the 87th Fighter Squadron till it closed and then moved over to the SAC side of the base and worked on B52s and KC135s. I went back to see the old base in 2021 and was shocked at how it had been left to fall apart. I have a lot of fond memories of my time spent there. It was very sad to see the places I frequented on base in such ruin.

The military waste so much of our hard earned tax dollars. You see hundreds of billions of dollars wasted all over the country and abroad just like this. Tons of the bases were massive as well. I say make all the vandels, thieves and prisoners fix all these places up and let the veterans live in them or even homeless as long as they maintain them.
