Man. I'm glad i didnt buy this bike. I almost did. It also has a major design flaw in the pivot/bb. Check out Vitalmtb's video (santacruz mega tower vs rocky mountain altitude) Skip to 10:08. As for the damage that occured this isnt normal and frankly unacceptable. Ive had hard rock impacts on my carbon bikes and it would chip off a bit but never go through. Verry disapointed in rocky mountain right now.
@ChainBrothersMTB
@ChainBrothersMTB 24 күн бұрын
Yeah I was … disappointed and frankly cannot recommend it. The pivot also loosened on me- was retightened and I didn’t have enough time on it to comment whether or not it stayed. It’s unfortunate- until this happened- I was loving it. I’m replacing it with an alloy bike.
@TheNoseman1

Carbon is bad news. Always. It always fails catastrophically, which I see in fly rods. Steel, titanium and aluminium don't have the issue as they can take a hit and keep going. Learn the hard way......

Any update on your warranty? My new ‘24 Altitude just cracked in the same spot. Apparently the new ‘25 Altitude has enhanced protection around the BB area, so I wonder if this has been a common issue for them?
@ChainBrothersMTB
@ChainBrothersMTB Ай бұрын
@@SteveCarmichael-sg1yg my understanding in talking with others- with cracks in the same spot is that this is common… the warranty frame is rumored to be a V2 version that is supposed to arrive end of the month I’m told. My warranty claim was approved.

Sorry about the damage to your sweet new bike. This is why I don't do carbon. You'd still be riding if it were metal. Also, it looks like you must have smashed a pretty large rock or something very hard. I don't know how bike companies can warranty when we cause the damage. I don't think your frame just came apart by itself?
@ChainBrothersMTB
@ChainBrothersMTB 24 күн бұрын
No massive impact occurred… I mean the video is the video. There was a rock that tagged the frame on the fire road- but if an enduro bike can’t handle a fire road…. Agreed about the carbon bit- I’m replacing it with alloy.

I have the 4 and was annoyed by the "fuzzing" or micro blur you are talking about too. It was happening in all lighting contitions, its not actually the stabalistion settings. I've worked out its the shutter speed. If you dont touch it it can go as low as 1/30, this prouces the most blur on hits. If you go into the settings, you can choose to limit the lowest value to 1/200, it gets rid of most of it. At 1/400, its gone completly, however the compramise is more noise in lower light. When i say lower, 1/400 is fine for most of the year, bar the darkest trails in the winter (im in Scotland!). i treid to do a vid explaining it back in april. Also, it was the noise filter causing weird glitches in foggy conditions for me. My main annoyance is how much youtube downgrades the footage!!
@ChainBrothersMTB

Excellent insight- I finally figure this out and have settled on min shutter of 1/200 which I find very acceptable! Thankyou for posting.

I wouldn't really recommend limiting the iso on action cams when mountain biking in a forest. The when there is not enough light, the trade off is noise (or loss of detail because of the denoising) against motion blur. Motion blur is a big issue when using electronic stabilization which essentially just aligns the frames to reduce shaking. The movement of the frame is gone, but the motion blur remains, leading to what you called the stabilization going awry.

As a rule of thumb I always try to have my shutterspeed double of the fps, so 1/120 with 60fps. this eliminates the shocky footage and makes it flow a lot more. To be able to do so I pop a ND8 on there which makes it work in most conditions. In the forest it should be ok without if you feel like trying it out without buying ND's. Thanks for the review, you're right on with the pixels being pushed together making it hard to say what the actual megapixel quality is with camera's like this, same with phones and drones.

If you're soliciting suggestions: I would try playing with the sharpness and noise reduction options in picture quality (I landed on both 0, but you might want to go into the negatives). Will reduce the "AI oversharpened" look a little bit.

I run a DVO onyx on my RS29 and I actually started it out at 170. Definitely way too much. I’ve been running it at 160 all season and it’s a really good set up. The odd time it does feel a bit like it wants to come up in steeper climbs but overall. Good travel choice. I do like the extra burliness in this frame. It does have a bit of dampening but overall the stiffness is great for the chunky trails that I choose to ride. Cheers

Hey I’m running the Hero8 black on a chin mount. I think the current best cam this year is the DJI Osmo action 4. The key is the lower megapixel count- it is more light sensitive than the newer GoPros that IMO put too many megapixels on the sensor - which means they are all smaller and each less sensitive. Takes more light and will have less dynamic range. Add to that the demands of mtb… I sold my Hero 11 for this reason. So IMO - GoPro peaked at the Hero8… 24 megapixel + is for APSC sized sensors and above- which for different reasons wouldn’t be practical in an action cam application!

@ChainBrothersMTB
@ChainBrothersMTB Жыл бұрын
I might walk back my opinion on the 150-160mm fork. I think both are great with the 150 feeling more balanced and the 160 requiring a more weight forward stance which works well for steep trails. Anyway the frame has a lot of stand over clearance so it comes down to the reach measurement and whether that will work for you. This bike is easily the best hardtail I’ve ever ridden- so worth it over other models if it works for you.

I ordered a small obsidian frame earlier this year and finished the setup in March. I love mine. I'm on the East Coast in the states so this is perfect for my area. I have it setup w/ a 150mm Lyrik Ultimate (2022), Shimano and Raceface mix for the transmission, and Saint brakes with 203mm rotors. I'm also using a 35mm bar [my width 780mm] and Continental Xynotal front and Kryptotal rear both DH casing supersoft. I initially was running beater oem specialized wheels from 5 years ago, but now I'm about to finish installing the new wheelset I had made for this, DT Swiss FR 541 rims on Chris King centerlock hubs.
