4:00 great swing! looks like having a nice long backswing might be the way with these shafts.

Were the ball weights similar? Your experiment mirrors my experience with old balls, not as old as those you experimented with but 40 or 50 years old. I find that the shorter shot distances are not too different to modern balls but when longer shots are attempted the modern ball far exceeds the older ball distances. Which I guess proves that modern balls are developed for spin around the greens and maximum distance on the long shots.

there are quite similar to modern balls ... within a couple of grams.

What modern balls would you recommend for hickory golf?
@timewarpgolf2 ай бұрын
Hi, personally I think you'll have a better hickory golf experience playing a softer ball like a Callaway ChromeSoft. However, in the 20 years I've been doing hickory golf events in the UK I've had thousands of participants playing with all types of balls from rock hard TopFlites to very soft Noodles. Best regards, Gavin.

I'm expecting plenty of good pars next week Gav, decent play with that old ball I'd say!
@ClassicGolfClubs2 ай бұрын
Well played! You were getting some good yardage with the mesh ball, I assume it was a wound ball? I find old balls are generally about 85 to 90% the distance of modern, but I've never gone more than 50 years old.
@timewarpgolf2 ай бұрын
yes, a wound ball. Felt like hitting a wet sponge. I think the elastic bands had degraded on the very first one I hit that didn't make it across the river. I hope it washes up on the banks a few holes down... it'll make someone think "what's that!!!"

Here's what I learned using a 100 year old ball... 1) The first ball I hit had clearly lost a massive amount of compression... it was struck quite well but travelled less than 100 yards. 2) Expect considerable paint loss from the ball's surface. 3) The antique ball feels way more softer than any modern ball when hit...and sounds quite different from a modern ball. 4) It's easy to hit putts either too hard or too soft. 5) Normally my chip and run shots are reasonably good... but not with this antique ball! 6) My best drive was about 185 yards... using a modern ball for comparison on the same hole it went only about 8 yards further. 7) The antique ball flew quite straight .. it didn't duck and weave in the air.

I have a random Collection of old clubs my grandmother bought at a yard sale 50 years ago. There’s a hendry viper with the name Carl Anderson below the hendry n bishop name. Another is WH Potts special with lead in back of club head. And one has nothing on face, and barely visible symbol with faint writing in the middle on back of club head. So this fairly boring looking club could be the oldest one it seems. Is there any method to raise the engraving without destroying it??

Hi Gavin just watched your film of Highwoods GC having a Hickory golf day. I play there every year it’s a course where we (Sussex Golf Captains) have a yearly mixed 4 somes event. I recognise Andy Lamb in the filming plays off 2 or 3 I think. Wish I’d known in advance might have popped down. Hope your wife enjoyed the mighty Owls comeback at the end of the season. Best wishes Ian Wood.

Hi, love your videos. Do you have any guidance or videos that illustrate removing a pryatone shaft and then converting to a hickory shaft. I understand that the hosel will be smaller in the original pryatone club and I will need to take material off the hickory shaft to make it fit. These will be display only so as long as I can make them look good I'm not trying to make them strong enough to play with. Thanks in advance, Bob
@timewarpgolf8 ай бұрын
Hi , I'm afraid I don't. I've never actually converted any pyratone shafted club to hickory, iron or wood. Some irons seem to have a wide enough hosel, and some woods seem to have wide enough necks to accommodate a hickory shaft. And quite a number of people have successfully converted clubs in the past so definitely possible. regards Gavin

Once you have installed the shaft to the club do you linseed oil it or varnish in another word what’s the best way to keep it treated?

wood stain or dye, then varnish , then wax is my preference.

What did they use to attach the heads to the shafts when golf 1st started???
@timewarpgolf11 ай бұрын
the first written record of golf dates 1457. We don't know exactly what clubs looked like then but very likely similar to what are known as the "Troon Clubs" you can Google them. The heads and shafts were joined by a splice joint, called a scare. They would've used glue, made from animal keratin, and then bound over the join with linen string.

That's really amazing, thank you for the video! My only question is where could one find GP? Is it something you can just look up online and purchase or would it be better to go to a certain type of store and look for it?
@timewarpgolf Жыл бұрын
here's what I've learnt... it is very very very difficult to get hold of natural gutta... in fact somebody stated that none...zilch...had been commercially produced since 1995 in Malaysia and even then it was about 500 GBP per kilo!!! The piece I obtained is at least 40 years old. I am considering chopping it into ball size lumps and selling it.
@sehrgut423 ай бұрын
@@timewarpgolf I guess this means dental gutta percha points have been produced with backstock inventory of raw gutta, then? From everything I can find in the dental literature, endodontic gutta percha points are still made using natural gutta, along with fillers and rheological modifiers.
@ClassicGolfClubs Жыл бұрын
A possible cause of the equator depression. Re the "split" around the seam on the second heating, I've never seen raw gutta percha but at the start of the video it appeared to have a slightly fibrous element to it. Many polymers are fromed from strings, if gutta percha is the same, then when it was compressed in the mould the surface layer would have been squeezed out to form the fin and some of the fibre strands forced out too. Then cutting the fin off would cut the fibres and create a weak point so that when reheated the ball would expand slightly and the cut would separate.
@timewarpgolf Жыл бұрын
yep, that seems very logical. I think you've got the nail on the head...thank you Nick.
@martinwright6255 Жыл бұрын
Would it be fair to say a professional ball maker (no disrespect intended) would be able to estimate the weight of the GP needed, rather than using 3 seperate pieces, which seems to me to have an inherent weakness. But that then raises the question - did the ball makers ever use all those trimmings to make balls ?
@timewarpgolf Жыл бұрын
yeah, they no doubt became skilled at taking a much more accurate chunk. I also seem to remember it came in "rope form"...i.e a rolled sausage so much easier to gauge.

Hi Gavin, thanks for the video! Very useful. Two questions: I have some bended hickory shafts. Does it help to straithen them out with in a wooden mold with a heat-gun? Or does it come back in a bended form? Can you give me a link for the leather golf bag? I have only a couple of old canvas(/leather) bags which are too brittle to walk the course.
