They are using high explosives. The gasses generated by the reaction are not important. In warhead design we discard the explosive and products as soon as the reaction is complete. By then the shockwave has entered the material and that is what does the work. If you used gunpowder then the pressure would be important, because that's deflagration. In HE the reaction is supersonic in the material, and that wavefront carries the energy.

As a shotfirer I can tell you the gasses are very important, the primers job is to heat up and initiate the explosive column, ea kg of loaded product will make 1000lt of gas's and the immediate expansion in the designed pattern is what throws all the rock or burden in the desired direction.

Hello, I'm currently studying mining and minerals engineering at VT(Switching to it next semester, so excited.) I'm taking diff eq right now and deforms next semester. I can't wait for explosives and fragmentation class. Any tips? I think this summer I need to review gen chem, statics and I am taking calc 3.
