Biography of Don Bosco Early Life Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco, widely known as Don Bosco, was born on August 16, 1815, in the small village of Becchi, in the Kingdom of Sardinia (now part of Italy). He was the youngest son of Francis Bosco and Margherita Occhiena. His father died when Giovanni was just two years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his two brothers in poverty. Education and Spiritual Formation Despite the family's financial difficulties, Giovanni showed an early desire for learning and a strong spiritual inclination. He had a profound influence from his mother, who instilled in him deep religious values. To pursue his education, Giovanni worked various jobs and showed an incredible determination and ingenuity. In 1835, he entered the seminary at Chieri and was ordained a priest on June 5, 1841. As a young priest, Don Bosco was deeply moved by the plight of the youth in the rapidly industrializing city of Turin. He was particularly affected by the young boys who flocked to the city seeking work but often ended up living in dire conditions, subject to exploitation and neglect. Founding of the Salesians In response to these needs, Don Bosco began his mission to educate and care for these young boys. He opened an oratory, which served as a place of worship, education, and recreation. His innovative approach combined religion with practical training and was both compassionate and effective. On December 8, 1844, Don Bosco and a small group of young men dedicated themselves to the education and care of the boys, laying the foundation for what would become the Salesian Society. The Salesians were officially established in 1859, with the primary mission of helping poor and abandoned boys through education, vocational training, and spiritual guidance. Expansion and Legacy Don Bosco's work quickly spread beyond Turin. He established workshops, schools, and hostels across Italy and sent missionaries to various parts of the world. His method of education, known as the "Preventive System," emphasized reason, religion, and loving-kindness, and it became a model for educators worldwide. In addition to the Salesian Society, Don Bosco, with the help of Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello, founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in 1872, which focused on the education and care of girls. Death and Canonization Don Bosco died on January 31, 1888, in Turin, leaving behind a vast network of educational and social institutions dedicated to the welfare of youth. His life's work earned him recognition and admiration both within and outside the Catholic Church. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI on April 1, 1934. Today, the Salesian Society and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians continue his mission globally, operating in over 130 countries. His legacy lives on through the countless institutions and initiatives inspired by his vision and dedication.
