This is why I get a little annoyed at the 'Russia is evil, he's completely malicious' portrayal. Russia, as a country, has had a long and grisly history bathed in blood, the leaders have abused their power; I think Ivan's just seen too much over his life and is affected by it. If you look at his interaction with the Baltics; when he pushes Latvia's head down, it's almost like he doesn't realise it hurts or is doing damage - it looks like he's playing around with Latvia too roughly but isn't listening. I don't think he realises when he hurts people, he just wants everyone to be together as a family. Obviously, it doesn't completely absolve him of what he does; but he needs help more than fear. I just don't see him as purposefully cruel and violent. (I'm probably a little biased though, as Russia is one of my favourite characters.
