Good luck with the little butter bushes. I wonder if they'd benefit from a little cloche to kick start them while in the ground. I've not done mine yet - so much rain, wind and it's been very cold here so the plants have stopped growing, or slowed down big time. I use miscanthus for the chicken bedding and I remember in the old house the slugs used to criss-cross over to pick up spilt food. I removed food at night - they were even in the feeders! YUK! A friend has given me sheep wool - costs more to travel to the wool pick up point than what they get back in return for the shearings. They had spare so I've used that. They don't like lanolin apparently - makes a good mulch and weed suppressant. I've used it sparingly, trying nematodes, and I'm going to put duck feed into traps this year and make a sludge - it has brewers yeast in the pellets!

Hi Kerry. Good suggestion re the cloche. Thanks. I think a multi-pronged approach to slug defences is best. Hope it warms up soon to deter those. Ritters from coming out. Have a great week. Mags.

😢 oh Mags so sorry, I’m dealing with similar, standing helps but laying down is a totally painful situation which is not conducive to a good nights sleep. I have about 3 on my apple tree 😂😂. Can you put a frame and esplanade them (I think that’s what it’s called). My parsnips were all slug food. Great garlic 👍. Do you dry your shallots in the same way as the garlic? It’s looking good Mags and hopefully a good season is in the making, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦

Sorry to hear the slugs got your parsnips. Mine are doing well fingers crossed. I have let the shallots dry a bit but actually am going to process them all for the freezer. Sorry also, to hear your back woes. I’m glad I can sleep with mine. Standing and walking are my issues 🥴. I’m pleased with my garlic harvest after all. We are in for a week of warmer weather - yay! Hope your weather is behaving. Mags

Those little apples look so healthy. I loved my Egremont, I'd love to have one here, but we have more than enough! LOL! Sorry about your sciatica, I know what that's like and walking it off definitely helps. My mum always said she had toothache in her bottom - I think a fair description! Brilliant bit of carpentry! Well done! Hahaha! The women were too much for Sid! Rather disappointed Eddie doesn't have a mop of curly hair though! You can still use the garlic leaves if they look good bonus with decent bulbs. I'd be happy with those!

how do you keep the cage sooooo clean? Haha I heard they are messy and poops everywhere. I wonder if they could be trained like hamsters and rabbits to only poo on specific places?
@mygardenanddinosaurs
@mygardenanddinosaurs Күн бұрын
They are little poo monsters. I use a hemp bedding called aubichick. It really dries out poos and they disintegrate. It means the quail don’t suffer with poo balls on their toes. I skim the surface most days and replace as needed but the aubichick really makes it easier and much less smelly. I wish you could toilet train them though 🥴

Great live, a lot of slug issues, you just need to feed the slugs. Inter plant with Chinese cabbage and pak choi which the slugs just love and so they have left all the other plants / brassica.

I have one - I've set it to 20 degrees and everything has popped up, apart from old Tigerella seeds. I sowed so many squashes almost a week ago. Some germinated after 2 days (Uchiki kuri) and two butternuts after 3 days. Nothing until I looked last night and the rest have romped almost out of the pots! It was ooh I say and a happy dance! Mine is a different thermostat to yours, but if I can do it - you'll find it easy! Enjoy!!!!

Hi Mags So nice to have the tomatoes planted in their final place, isn’t it? I got my tomatoes tied up in string today in the greenhouse, but I still have many that I don't have room for. They will probably be planted outside, although I don't have much success with outdoor tomatoes. We've had fantastic weather throughout May, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it continues. I have mostly Sungold tomatoes. Friends and family love them and expect some donations of Sungold I think. Furthermore, I have Brandywine, Roma, Virginia Sweet, San Marzano, Dulchita and Big Roma. I haven't bought tomato seeds this year, just planted the ones I had from earlier. Sungold has come the furthest, with 2 thrushes and a few tomatoes the size of small peas. Good luck with your tomatoes, Mags.

I love seeing experiments! I did try cutting the potato this year but they all went mouldy! Still, have plenty and the surplus seed (overdid it again) are in containers like your big pot in the polytunnel - my little experiment! Elephant garlic in the container - nope, it doesn't like it at all! So much compost though - getting through the bags! On a brighter note, they'll all be put into the raised beds when they are done. Good luck with the little potatoes - you are brave! I'm a chicken! LOL! xx

We put them up nearly 2 years ago, too much fighting with weeds - still fighting the couch grass, but a huge covering of spent ducky bedding helped keep them down. Husband tackled a lot this year - in 2 beds we have volunteer raspberries! I've put the winter onions in with them - so far so good! Spuds I've done a bit different widthways like Huw's, the others two lengthway rows. I'm really impressed with what you have from one potato though!
