I have no experience racing gravel but I used to race mtb xc, marathon and even experienced several 24 hr races. I no longer race. I think you want to do well in race in such a short period of time. You lose heart when you're not doing well and that's the reason you quit. That's not how it works. Mental toughness and tenacity should all be part of it. Crashes, mechanicals etc, they're normal, you just have to go on.
@FlyingGravelManАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience and perspective! You're absolutely right-mental toughness and tenacity are key, and I'm learning that more and more with every race. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t go as planned, but part of the challenge is staying mentally strong through crashes, mechanicals, and setbacks. Your advice is a great reminder to keep pushing forward, no matter what happens. I really appreciate the insight, and it’s something I’ll carry with me into future races!

Not sure why you're suggesting he didn't have the grit. He hurt his back in the crash and after some hard effort getting back in it decided not to continue with increasing amounts of pain.. has nothing to do with mental toughness, rather with not wanting to injure yourself long-term or even permanently. I think anyone who really wants to perform well will feel some discouragement when another rider takes you out and that's totally fine to express, he barely even expressed it much anyway. Being disappointed is not a lack of tenacity, it's part of the process. Saying that as a former pro motocross racer who dealt with a lot of scenarios very similar to this one.

Enjoying the race coverage 👍. Each race will teach u a few lessons, key is to remember them! In such a long race its important to accept that it cannot be won in the first corner/km. However, for other competitors this isnt realised so let those guys go until they blow, you just go at the pace u are happy with until your are 'feeling it' and ready to push. Then go past them. Tyre choice here was a big lesson i think and having better tyres would have given you a little more control. Well done for getting back up and back onto the group. Good luck in Germany 👍

Thank you so much for the thoughtful feedback! You're absolutely right - each race is a learning experience, and I’m definitely trying to take in as many lessons as I can with every event. Patience and pacing are huge in these long races, and I appreciate the reminder to ride at my own pace and not get caught up with others early on. Totally agree on the tyre choice as well! It’s something I’ll definitely think more about next time, especially for better control on tricky sections. Thanks again for the support, and I’m excited for my next challanges! 🙌🚴♂️

Really enjoyable video - thank you - I've watched it through 2x to get as much insight about this race as possible. For your back pain - the best help in all conditions is just to work on core strength training. Potentially you have some bike fit issues, perhaps an over-long reach. Just sitting up from time to time and moving about on your bike can delay this kind of back pain, but when it arrives, you mostly have to live with it. You don't mention anything specific about nutrition, energy management strategy, or accumulated fatigue over the race. Did you stop at the feed stations? You said your legs felt good at the end but I wonder if you noticed how much and when other riders were getting tired during the race? One last question - how far into the race was the bridge that caused that bottleneck? Do you know how much it affected riders further up the field? Once again, thanks for the efforts making the video and your openness. Beste wensen.
@TrickyDickyBE3 ай бұрын
I just found out that the bridge is with 143kms of racing to go, so in the first 7-8kms approx.
@TrickyDickyBE3 ай бұрын
According to your official results page [Bas] (I'm not stalking you - just wanting to learn about the course!) - shows a similar profile to all riders, in that your rolling average speed drops from 33,5kmh in the first 45k split, to 31,2kmh in the 45-80km split, and you show a further reduction in avg speed between 120-150kms - reflected in the avg speed of all riders. So clear;ly there is a lot of fatigue setting in, but I also wonder if the course is more sandy or twisty at the end too? Again, I'm just looking for any insights you can give about pacing strategy. Bedankt.
@FlyingGravelMan3 ай бұрын
Wow, thank you for sharing your insights! I've been focusing on core training for the past year, and it has helped reduce my back pain significantly. However, it still becomes an issue during tough races. I didn't mention nutrition in my recap because I’m still gaining experience in that area, especially since this was my first race. For tomorrow's race, I plan to consume around 100g of carbs each hour. My strategy includes drinking one bag of Maurten's drink mix plus one caffeine gel every hour. I’ll also mix 1.5L of water with three bags of Maurten's drink mix in my USWE Hydra pack. These Hydra packs are great because they make you slightly more aero, and the weight penalty is minimal on a flat course. Tomorrow we’ll start in different waves, so I’m uncertain about the situation at the bridge. Hopefully, the course won’t include it, but we’ll see how it goes. Have you made any last-minute changes to your tires due to the rainy weather forecast for today and tomorrow? Thanks again for your thoughts and good luck tomorrow!
@FlyingGravelMan3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if pacing would be the right strategy on this course. I think there is much more to gain at the first 120km's from drafting as the course is flat. I don't recall that the end is more sandy or twisty. You can always check out the surfaces of the course if you analyse it in Komoot ;)

@@FlyingGravelMan Hey Bas, how did you get on yesterday? I missed qualifying by 4 mins (#1822). I broke my derailleur hanger at 92kms and was restricted in what gears I could use. I fell off about 10x, 2x over the handlebars into deep water (one of them the puddle was so deep I couldn’t see my front wheel axle when I went over the handlebars!). I just missed falling into dykes 2x. What a day. I did fine with nutrition and drinking, but the mud created lots of problems opening the zip on the bag with my food in. The start also seems stupid to keep us separated in waves while we wait but then to remove all the tape barriers to create a big fight for position before we even crossed the start line. I want to win by being a faster rider, not being aggressive and pushy in queues.

These kind of videos are always worth to watch also to learn from mistakes. It happened to me in a race that I totally messed up my line because I was just cooked and lost focus.

They was an intense race…. Strange on lap 1, I was worried about that tight bend as it was poorly marshalled, a high speed downhill should have more caution, and you go down now!🙈. At least you finished and nothing broken. Well Done. Great course but of course not fully gravel. What tires did you use? Also would you do this event again or try another one?
@FlyingGravelMan3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I should have probably been more worried haha. The marshal that stood there also told me that more people had crashed there, but it was mainly because of the tiny bit of rain that had fallen that the corner was super slippery… No not fully gravel but it was tough enough I would say (; I used specialized pathfinder in de back and Vredestein Aventura in the front for more grip😂 I really liked the course so I would like to come back. Depending on de uci gravel calendar next year. This year it was nice that I could travel to Swiss for the gravel Suisse this weekend, which is only a 3 hour drive from Singen.

@FlyingGravelMan4 ай бұрын
Zo kreeg ik hem van Telemetry uitgelegd: 1 - You can create a Custom mini gauge, select the Power data, and use the Factor control on the right to apply the formula you described by multiplying the Power data by a number. For example, for a 60 kg person, you would set a Factor of 0.016667 (1/60). For 80 kg it would be 0.0125 (1/80) Succes ;)
