I just wanted to get a little preview for what i was getting into before digging into my bike. It's good to see young people who care enough to take the time to do things right. I'm not exactly an old timer or anything, but I put in about 12 years in bikes shops and so often people are in a rush to get things apart and back together that they break stuff along the way and make things worse for themselves. Keep it up, and thanks for the video!

@RoxlimnАй бұрын
Honestly, you never listen to the marketing. LOL. What kind of noob move is that? You look for the bike that has the specs you want, you ride it, and then if you gel with it, you buy one. Easy as. If you don’t get the bike you want, you really only have your own judgement to blame. I’ve been waiting for this “gravel bike” boom for a while, now, so I’m glad I can get one for cheap without having to Frankenbike something from XC and road parts.
@jayb.66852 ай бұрын
I totally understand you. I have an Xc hardtail and an aero roadbike, both race bikes and I told myself, I'm never getting a gravel bike, why get something that's slower than an roadbike and less capable than an mtb. The my wife offered me to buy a 3rd bike cuz I was good. Then I got a gravel bike. And it's all i've been riding for the past month.

I was considering a Domane SL7 gen3 that my LBS has in stock. It's new and is heavily discounted. It has Sram Force etap, Aeolus Pro v3 wheels. I want comfort above anything. I ride solo for fitness three times per week. My roads have really poor surface, lots of bumps. I don't race. I'm coming from a 2014 Look 566 with 105 groupset. Reading all the comments now makes me think i should avoid this front isospeed as i absolutely hate rattles. Any advice appreciated... I'm also considering a new Specialized Roubaix SL8 comp.
@swanauto472 ай бұрын
The Roubaix comp is 20% off right now and comes with aluminum wheels yes, but you could get the 105 level carbon wheels for $1,050 so your whole bike would be $5,050. It would be very similar to a Domane SL7 and probably lighter too. In my experience after riding both the Roubaix is smoother to me, I think you will really like it. Just play around with the springs and make sure you have one that dampens it enough for your weight.

Is this a more upright bike than the specialized diverge base?
@swanauto473 ай бұрын
You’re talking the aluminum E5? For that, the Checkmate is actually 3mm more upright more or less because of the top tube length. Based on the size 54 comparison. There are a few more things with the geometry that go into it but that is the main aspect I focus on. It can’t be changed like saddle height
@vbnxt3 ай бұрын

Awful audio on this one. Can use bike insights website to visually compare geo. The gen 3 Checkpoint has a shorter top tube and shorter stem for a more upright position. The Checkmate geo is almost identical to the Specialized Crux. The biggest improvement I see with the Checkpoint and Checkmate is the UDH. Kind of dumb to buy a bike that does not have UDH at this point.

Changed the bars to 40cm. stem to 90mm, carbon seatpost and saddle, DT Swiss rims, Vittoria Rubino G2 tires, latex tubes, and 11speed 105 groupset with SPD-SL pedals. It regularly beats many much newer and higher spec bikes it's still super comfortable, and rolls beautifully.

If you think riding dirt roads is some kind of special occasion that only occurs once or twice a year then you're not really qualified to be speaking on this subject. I have lived all up and down the East Coast, generally in places with good proximity to public land like Northern New England, Upstate NY, and the Southern Appalachians. Poorly maintained dirt roads are the RULE in these areas. A road bike will get you inured very easily. Vermont is the best example of this, so it's funny you mentioned it. You're not going anywhere in Vermont on slick road tires unless you're right in Burlington.

I've been riding on Sora for about 5-6 years. I've tried a few different chains (Sram, Shimano, KMC) and cassettes as well. Now I'm using KMC X9 chains which is the best option regarding the price, how it works and the way it is linked. Moreover, I've mounted Shimano Deore XT 9s cassette and now the whole drive works perfectly fine.

45mm treaded tires, rigid fork. That's the ideal all-purpose set up for a bike that's going to see a roughly equal measure of pavement and rough dirt roads with the occasional trail shortcut thrown in. Is that a "gravel bike"? I don't really care what you call it.

Thanks for the video, can you list why you choose rim brakes over discs? Ive always had rim brakes, and if all of the pros have switched, why shouldnt we? (Once cost comes down)
@swanauto477 ай бұрын
For me it came down to the amount of stuff that can go wrong. I’ve had rim and disc brake bikes and without fail I’ve worked on at least one disc brake bike per day with some kind of warped rotor or contaminated rotor that squeals or tings and brakes horribly. I got contamination on one of my Ultegra rotors I had before and my Force rotors I had were pretty good but it recommends that the DOT fluid be bled once a year. That’s just extra stuff I have to do. Also if the hose is threaded into the lever wrong the entire lever is done in most cases and it could be a super pricey electronic one. I’ve had tons of good rides on both rim and disc brake bikes so they aren’t all good or all bad but less spokes in the front wheel for less drag, as well as not having service intervals on my brakes is what did it for me. Also they just look super clean a lot of the time and handle better since the front fork can have more freedom of shape and design.
