silly question, but do you use different types of pencils for the sketch or just stick with one? (like different HB graphite pencils)
@katiemaeveart19 сағат бұрын
I just stick with the one because the blackwing pencils are pretty versatile! if I was using a pencil set I would normally go with a 2b - maybe a h for the initial sketch and a higher grade like 4b for the super darks. you can do a lot with pressure though 😄

I think your lady is more believably human than the original. Fair play to Ingres though - his textiles are astonishing. I do have a suggestion for another study actually, which might tempt you. That's Augustus John's portrait of Wyndham Lewis (an etching), and there's a good image on Christie's website. Many thanks for another fascinating video.

@katiemaeveart2 күн бұрын
thankyou! that’s nice to hear 😄 I use my moleskine art sketchbook - paper is smooth, ivory-colored, 165 g/m², acid-free paper. it’s actually almost a little too smooth - I like the tiniest bit of tooth on my paper. still hunting for the perfect sketchbook 😅

I’m so confused. I just got procreate and I’m brand new to digital art. I go to my pencils to try and start a drawing and it’s in blue? I go to charcoal and it’s red? Whatever I do, it’s some different color. I watch a tutorial and no one else has this problem. They just choose a pencil and start drawing and bobs your uncle?

I enjoyed the tutorial and seeing at the conclusion how you had caught the likeness really well . However , can you , please , drop the funereal organ background music - it’s not just distracting, it’s depressing !

glad you enjoyed. I ran a poll on the music and the majority vote was to keep the music as is. I hope you appreciate it’s impossible to please everyone. I’m still hunting for royalty free background music that’s more on the relaxing but upbeat side so fingers crossed next one will be less depressing for you!

Please, draw the painting Young GIirl or Another Portrait of a Girl (1640, The Metropolitan Museum of Art), by DIego Velazquez. (the greatest exponent of realism in painting, he surpassed Rubens and van Dick in the mastery of light and anatomy) She is a girl with subtle makeup, black eyes, and short black hair, posing sideways and wearing a cream dress, but only in profile size.

I have a loose guess as to why people are falling in love with unfinished sketches. I feel like people are more exposed to the process of how art is created, and it feels demystified in a sense. So people are falling in love with the different techniques used to make a sketch, and it’s easier to see that when it’s unpolished. Personally, when I see a sargent sketch I am enamored by the gestural anatomical accuracy and composition. Seeing that is easier in charcoal than in a painting.

Hi Katie, thanks for another great drawing video. If you're curious about the rough texture of the drawing - I believe he acheived this in part by drawing on rice paper (possibly en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xuan_paper?). Would make for a cool experiment!

@katiemaeveart16 күн бұрын
aargh no! I love the mournful piano music. I appreciate people might not have the same taste in music and I have tendency to reuse the same tracks because of digital rights - I shall put it to a public poll . Thanks for the feedback Patrick! 😄👍🏻

Making notes on my phone, including pictures of a few key stages throughout the drawing. See Katie put her pencil down, so I think "ah she must be finished, I will take a picture showing the final result :)". She picks up the pencil and adds more detail. "No problem, I will delete and retake :)". Katie picks up her pencil again...hol up.

I love following along with you and strive to get the accuracy you get❤ thank you so much for your videos. Do you have any advice on mark making , for example pencil type and pressure? At the end of my piece it always seems too dark. I have a heavy hand I think.
@katiemaeveart18 күн бұрын
@@Idahadleyart thankyou ! Which pencil do you use? Generally one option is to draw lightly and take your time to build up tone with layers of tones laid in with gentle pressure - it takes a while to build up the control but you will get there. Another option - if you use pencils with various grades - is to start with a 2h/h pencil and move up the pencil grades as you build up tones - ending with 4b only for the really dark areas. That can have some good effects. Last option would be to knock the drawing back if you feel that it’s too dark by rolling over it with a kneaded eraser- that can help with too heavy graphite. Good luck!

The wiki article link you give in the “description “ shows your reference photo is of a male model.
@katiemaeveart19 күн бұрын
ah interesting - I don’t see that on my iPad - only that it’s tagged as lady - I did a bit of an internet hunt and a website I found claimed it as a study of Henry’s wife. it would explain the masculine aspects if it was in fact a male model 😂 either way - beautiful painting
@renzo649020 күн бұрын
There are two terms: Guys and Gals. But the word 'guys' has been adopted to include both genders. Of the two terms, why has GUYS been adopted? Why not 'gals' ? The answer is that there is a higher societal value to being male than there is to being female. Why are males bothered when addressed as 'gals' but females are assumed not to be bothered when addressed as 'guys' ? Why are women allowed to dress like men, but men cannot dress like women ? Why can women adopt men's names but men can't adopt women's names? There is a higher societal value to being male than there is to being female. It's SEXISM in speech and writing. Drop "Guys". The word ''Folks'' is better. Try it.

Thanks! I think hatching and raking marks they can look quite effective - they just take a while to get to the level of skill where you can control them well enough. I’m definitely a work in progress! Dave Malen is a contemporary artists I can think of who has such good control there - also Hollis Dunlap. The former more illustrative, the latter more painterly. Check them out! Still working on my control on that front 😂
