I respect Dr. Witherington’s scholarship and knowledge but he can really come across as smug, especially against reformed theology. His understanding of reformed theology, from what I know of it, seems over-simplistic and littered with error. He is either aware of it and intentionally misrepresenting it or his is not aware of it and is ignorant. I don’t even know where I fall between the Armenianist and the Calvinists, all I know is there are very good theologians in both camps and that there is a respectful way to disagree and then there ridiculing, like Dr. Witherington is doing. It makes me lose respect for him.

I appreciate your understanding of the struggles we lay Christians have with Biblical texts and your willingness to share what you have learned through hours of study, travel, prayer and revelation. The criticality of the consideration of language differences, context, esp. cultural differences, etc. when reading the Bible is relatively new to many Christians. The research others have done to enable us to make these considerations is a blessing to us all.

I studied Modern Greek before taking Ancient Greek. I understand many of the consonant dipthongs did not exist in Koine Greek. I understand the grammar better than anyone in my class, but I STRUGGLE with reading it the ""correct"" way. Modern Greek is smooth, Old English was smooth, but Ancient Greek? It's really obvious it was the dumbed down, χ became a k sound despite everyone agreeing it was a glottal sound (even the Slavs retained the letter and sound). It is painful to read it aloud, as opposed to reading it in my head where Erasmus can't get to me.

I love the Erasmian pronunciation. She certainly got the American accent down well! Hard to fathom that people still think that it is an accurate reconstruction. Most Erasmianists even admit that they just use it for convenience, not accuracy.
