The comparison of triple wall vs 6mm twin wall seems a bit biased. The energy use is closer to 50% more, not twice as much. And when you compared flexibility, you bent the 6mm twin wall with the grain, but you bent the triple wall against the grain.

Thanks for pointing this out! I wasn't aware of how I held the pieces. We'll make a little short with a more consistent test for each panel thickness (maybe with a weight instead of hand strength). How does that sound?
@hitmanperfect25 күн бұрын
Hi. Your test is not consistent, you place the samples once parallel and once perpendicular (chambers of Pc), looking at the angle of the sun in 8mm Pc the light must pass through two walls to hit sensor but in 10mm Pc it must go throught 3 walls (including the inner walls of the chambers) in 16mm Pc it's passing 4-5 walls. This wouldn't be a problem if the sun was at its zenith. A similar situation is with LUX meter, light from further diodes on the led barr hit samples on sharp angle it would be more precise if you use one led bulb straight abowe sensor. Sorry for my english, I'm from far away :)

Thanks for pointing these things out! I didn't consider it and sure enough, you're right. It makes a difference which direction it's placed (I just went outside and tested it real quick). It's comments like this I love the most. I'm intrigued to test the polycarbonate panels again. Keep in mind, we did say it's not a scientific test. We are not in a place to avoid/prevent all variables.

I would say since there are corners, it's not as complete or smooth of an airflow as you could get in a geodesic dome. However, it still has great air circulation capabilities.

do you know anything on heating greenhouse with black 55 gallon drum barrels, my greenhouse is 8x12 i have 4 barrels painted black,,filled with water .
@ghemporiumАй бұрын
You could add aquarium heaters to those barrels to keep them warmer over night but this may not be enough when temperatures drop below freezing or if you need higher temperatures for the plants you're growing. In this case, you'd need a heater. If you know the R-value of your polycarbonate, you can calculate the BTUs you need with this calculator: greenhouseemporium.com/greenhouse-heater-calculator/ and then buy a space heater accordingly.

Any ideas why the 8mm polycarbonate resulted in better light transmission than the 4 AND higher ones?
@ghemporiumАй бұрын
As far as we can say, the clarity of the polycarbonate sheets and the channel size must have played a role in this. The Riga greenhouses use quite translucent sheets while the 4mm generic polycarbonate was slightly less clear. When you look at the width of the channels between the walls, you can also see quite a difference. The 4mm has very narrow channels which could result in more light being blocked.
@dozyproductionssАй бұрын
@@ghemporium that explanation actually makes sense. I'll make sure to check out the channels. Btw, in growing mary J, many of the better LED lights claim to having a 1.8 mol/joul rating. Would you want that type of intensity for any sun hungry crop?
@ghemporiumАй бұрын
@@dozyproductionss Now, we're rather talking about efficacy (PPE). As far as I understand it, µmol/J tells you how much usable light per Watt/Joule you get. A higher number is better as it provides more light per the same power spent. You can calculate PPF if you know the Wattage and PPE. For example, 1000W LED grow light with a 1.8 µmol/J rating will produce 1800 μmol/m²/s PPF. In veg stage, your plants only need 300-600 μmol/m²/s (less for seedlings) and 600-900 μmol/m²/s for flowering stage. This means the distance or a dimmer will help adjust the amount of light you'll give your plants during each stage. Hope this helps!

do you think using rigid foam board insulation would work on the lower walls of a greenhouse. ive seen R values of 13 on these
@ghemporiumАй бұрын
This could help, especially on the north side as well. As long as your plants still get light, I don't see why this couldn't be helpful. If you're going to try it out this winter, let us know how it goes! We would love to hear it.

what are your thoughts on using rigid insulation boards for lower walls in the very cold months
@davidjones2867Ай бұрын
Hello Trevor ,my greenhouse is polycarbonate,I am pleased up to now ,it was cheaper than glass ,but although it has two windows it tends to get a lot of condensation on the roof,which in turn has lead to a bit of blight on my tomatoes .This is my first year with this greenhouse, so is it a one off or am I likely to have this problem in future years ?
@ghemporiumАй бұрын
Hi @davidjones2867! Glad to hear you're happy with your polycarbonate greenhouse and thank you for your question. Condensation is very common in greenhouses. To reduce it, try increasing airflow with a fan (regular or exhaust fan). It would help if you also watered plants in the morning to lower humidity and refrain from overhead watering or misting systems (I don't know what you're using). Hopefully, that helps with future seasons!

First of all, any instruction, whether video or booklet gets a thumbs down. Just started putting the junior orangerie together. I just need to say that the instruction manual is worthless. The Chinese have better instructions. They took the time to number everything for you in the booklet but didn't bother to number any of the physical piecesthat are in the boxes...lol Can't find anywhere, how many curtain sliders I need for the gutter profiles. One of the pages is in a foreign language, lol Spending more time looking for videos and sending emails than anything else. Definitely would recommend another manufacturer.
@ghemporium2 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear you had trouble following the instructions. The assembly of the Janssens brand greenhouse can be challenging, if you do not pre-read the assembly manual, review the vast amounts of resources available to you, and make an assembly plan. The Shade curtain parts and quantities are clearly displayed on pg. 37 of 38, as is the Customer hotline for assembly help.

I've heard lux isn't the best metric for usable light for plants, because it's just measuring what humans can see, while PFAR measures what plants use for photosynthesis. I know it matters when shopping for grow lights, because lux won't sustain plant growth, obviously the sun provides as much as plants need and more. Not sure how it would factor into this test, maybe lux is a good-enough substitute here.
@ghemporium3 ай бұрын
This is a really good point! Thanks for bringing this up. You are right that PAR is more important when it comes to plant growth. After making the video, we were digging deeper into PAR and the color spectrum of light as well. We'll pack that into another video soon. Since we didn't have the equipment to measure PAR for this test, we used Lux. Lux is used for determining light intensity (bright light vs shaded light) which still tells you how much light comes through a covering material.

I need something a little larger than the Rigla to grow dwarf fruit trees. Any ideas?
@ghemporium3 ай бұрын
You can always put a Riga on a stem wall to increase the height by a few feet if that's enough. The Janssens Gigant (greenhouseemporium.com/products/janssens-gigant-greenhouse/) can go up to 12.75′ at the peak. It can be ordered with 10mm polycarbonate. Otherwise, we don't offer higher models. It would be a custom configuration at that point.

This is awesome and it looks like your team really knows their stuff! The only issue I have is price... T-slot extruded aluminum and 8mm panels would come up to 1k, maybe 1200. I think your pricing would be about 4k for a similar model say 10x12 and you would still need to assemble. I am sure your designs are great, I just can't justify that much on top.
@ghemporium4 ай бұрын
Hello John, there are several factor to consider when justifying a higher price point. Durability and reliability would be the first factors to come to mind. From our experience the lower priced units tend to have smaller, inferior framing, to include a cheaper polycarbonate. Causing you to spend more time stabilizing your greenhouse vs. growing your garden. We pride ourselves on the US grade Aluminum and a durable 8mm double wall polycarbonate, some times ( depending on model) a 16mm Triple wall polycarbonate. Which comes with a healthy 10yr-15 warranty.

A great video! What do you think about using plexiglass for building a greenhouse?
@ghemporium4 ай бұрын
Hello Andrew, Plexiglass would offer you a good transparent material for more light transmission but would not offer the same insulation factors as a good 8mm-10mm double wall polycarbonate.

Great video! We have been wanting a greenhouse for years. Our reason is that we live on the edge of a rainforest on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Our need for a greenhouse comes from the unbelievable amount of animals that destroy our tomato and pepper plants in a matter of minutes. From leaf cutter ants to Horn Worms, Cut Worms, Gigantic Grasshoppers as well as the large lizards and other various animals that know exactly when the tomatoes and peppers are at their tastiest. Temperature control would be a huge issue during the 4 months of dry season for sure. Would a polycarbonate greenhouse be a good choice for here???
@ghemporium3 ай бұрын
I am unsure if a polycarbonate greenhouse would be the best solution for you. It's hard to keep greenhouses cool and I assume it's quite hot where you live. Usually people skip growing in the greenhouse in the summer time because it easily gets 110+°F inside. You would have to keep the ventilation up and then pests might still get inside unless you are using screens. The secondary thing is pollination. If you don't create a good airflow so that they self-pollinate, you'd need to manually do that. I hope this helps!
