Funny this video popped up in my feed. I have spent the whole week running my ribbon burner you helped me create, and every time I look at it I am reminded of what a good man you are and hope you are healing and ready to get back to the forge.

Thank you very much for this review. I am just beginning to start making knives and I really don't have a lot of money to work with, so the cost of this and how well it works is going to be perfect for me.

I know this is older, but I held off and bought one of these 2 weeks ago. Upgraded motor, ground wire already fixed, and a few other improvements, but one thing to note... Those type of tightening arms for the tool rest and platen, etc... They are spring loaded and designed to be pulled out, twisted to a new spot, let go back on the bolt, then tighten. Rinse, repeat until tight.. This was on the old and new version and does NOT require an Alan wrench or modification of any sort.

I saw a video a few months back of a woman building her own. Want to say the channel is called Lucia's Shop or something like that. It seemed like an odd thing to DIY, then I saw the prices for similar machines, and thought "I need to get into the belt grinder business". Anyway, her's was gorgeous, like functional art.

Actually, borax is highly alkaline which is the opposite of acidic but it will destroy your forge.

Make sure the steel you choose is hardenable! Car springs or plain steel saw blades are usually good hardenable steel good for forge heat treats. If buying some steel, get 1084, not 1095 because it won't harden unless you water dunk which brings a bigger risk of cracking. Heat till just magnetic over the whole blade and not longer, and then quench quickly

I thought anvils were supposed to be forged, not cast. Ya think HF required a shock-resistant alloy? Nah. I wonder what a good hard swing with a long-handle ten pound sledge would do to it. Stop paying the Chinese to dump garbage on our shores!

In the parking lot?! Nope, I look before I buy, well... now I do! I have a 12 ton press that I bought from Harbor Freight and the hydraulic jack has leaked since day one. I can't get it to hold pressure nor will make much pressure. One of these days I will try to rebuild it.

@@jojofixer this is the second comment of this nature I’ve seen today so I feel the need to say something. A carpenters and a blacksmith hammer are not the same thing and not meant to be used in the same way. Driving nails and forging steel are two very different operations. Depending on the type of work you’re doing and how much power you need from the swing, the hammer handle should be shaped in a way that lends itself to a variety of grips easily. If I’m doing very fine work I may choke all the way up to just under the head. For general forge work I like to be about 3/4 choked back. If I’m trying to move metal fast or need a lot of power, I will choke all the way back to the end of the handle. Scott at essential craftsman said himself that he thought he know how to swing a hammer being a carpenter his whole life and it took him an afternoon in a blacksmith shop to figure out he didn’t know what he was doing. There’s a method to the madness I promise.

I bought a 5 inch vice from HF, and used it as I would any other 5 inch vice. After a few days of tightening and loosening aggressively like vices are supposed to endure, the threaded block that the threaded shaft moved through, broke. I was surprised to see small that threaded block was. After that, knowing it was useless, I hit the vice a few times with a sledge hammer. It cracked open to expose large hollows inside. Never again will I buy anything heavy duty from HF. Decided to shell out the bucks for a decent Wilton. Ya get what you pay for.
