I admit to rolling my eyes occasionally on these types of comments. However waves of excitement now wash over my body as I realise I’m amongst old comments on an old video… Here I go… Anyone else here in 2024?

There was one trick he did to show off bottom-dealing. He dealt 4 hands of 5 cards, one with 4 Queens turned face up. He dealt himself a straight flush. His tricks are always amazingly layered like that.

Before I knew this side of Ricky Jay, I watched The Ranger, The Cook, and The Hole in the Sky (1995) for a film studies class. I kept watching his card trick scene, watching for cuts and framing or anything that could explain how the filmmakers pulled it off. I was like, there's no way the actor can just do that...

Is it possible the video is being played in reverse? At least for parts? Would that explain why 0:32 looks like his hands switched? It wouldn't really change anything for me in terms of respect and amazement if it was, just kinda wondering (like many other people) how this is possible.

It's fooled a lot of people and you'll still find some willing to argue there's no camera trickery here...but there is. No card magician can do clearly genuine repeat riffles and end up with an ordered deck. The cards are well and truly randomly mixed by the 30 second point, when the edit obviously cuts to an ordered deck. Yes, he was a master card manipulator, and no magician feels a deck-switch is cheating in a table performance when its done with misdirection. This, however, is NOT card manipulation or masterly prestidigitation - it's a camera trick.

I have watched a lot of youtube for many years. This has to be one of the greatest videos I have ever seen. In fact, I would even say that it is too good. Most people won't even notice how utterly amazing it is due to the fact that it's minimalist and real and executed by a grandmaster, while we live in an age of the overcomplicated and fake and sophomoric.

Truly Ricky was (still is) the GOAT at sleights. Whenever I watch, I don't want to figure it out; out of respect for the Craft. It's still magical to me. I expected him to order the deck, but I still don't know how he did it... truly a Master.
