Using DEF with a hose sprayer works great and no work DEF is made from Urea, you have to adjust your quantity of DEF because it only about 67% urea.

Update 2 years later. Still nothing wants to grow food wise. Managed to get some flowers to struggle through it. Bales only broke down about 1/2 way. Still problems with pillbugs but slowly mitigating that issue (sluggo and soapy water spraying). Presumably the straw I bought was POISONED with herbicide at the field. Only reason I can figure that most things won't grow in it.

I have wanted to try this approach. The only thing I was concerned about was the bales setting on fire. Has that ever been an issue? Great video!

Wonderful info, I have not tried potatoes yet. I wondered if you had a long growing season if you could stack another bale on top and keep growing up?

Very informative video and I appreciate the effort. I did a hay bale garden two years ago in a new area of my garden. Straw is very scarce in my locale so I used hay and didn’t have many weeds at all. My plan was to put the hay bale garden in a place where I was going to have raised beds in the future. After completing the growing season and the following winter, the hay bales had composted down beautifully and I just built the raised beds around them and I had a great start on filling them with the composted hay material. Now, whenever I have a raised bed that the soil is getting low, I’ll do a hay bale garden for the season so it will fill up next season.

I was thinking of trying this method for sweet potatoes this year, I have a question though. Do you use any lime on the bails to speed this process up?

What can you add to the straw bales to stop flies from laying their eggs in it? This drove me crazy last year when I did the straw bale gardening for the first time. I ended up using an insecticide, but then the birds were eating the larvae and one of our resident bluebirds must have eaten one and we found her dead next to the straw bale. I'm wondering if I should add an insecticide when I add the fertilizer.

I have a good idea. How about using some manure, crushed Biochar and weed water with some yeast.

Hello from Australia, grateful I found you. About to commence my first hay bale garden beds. Thank you for educating me on preparing the bale. Do you have a video to share beyond day 6 of prep? You also mentioned 12 days in video 1, is it advised to not plant for 12 days and prep the bales for 12 days? thank you for your time

Absolutely. Impatiens are great notifiers. When they start wilting time to water the bales.

Cattle cloth is something our local farmers coop sells. It’s a cloth that is placed in areas where cattle will be walking a lot to kinda keep the mud down. Usually placed around feeding areas. It comes in 15 ft long pieces and u purchase by the foot. Really has helped with weeds for me.

I also read something that said you could cut top and bottom out of milk jug and build diet up around it a little then plant plant inside. I have not tried this yet but would love to see if it works. I am working with companion planting this year hoping to keep them at bay.

I conditioned my bales per your instruction and I planted tomatoes last week. I looked last night, most looked pretty good. I just now looked and several have black stuff on them and are looking bad. I think all of these mushrooms had something to do with it. There are new crops of hundreds of mushrooms every morning and the mostly seem to have black caps. Any ideas??
