I lived in Swainby for 10 years as a kid. The castle was our primary hangout point for all the kids in the village. Spent hours and hours there in the summer. Smoking, drinking, campfires all out of reach of the adults of course. Never saw or heard a damn thing.

Hi, this is news to me. I grew up in Saltburn and attended the local schools. At Huntcliff School, we were educated about the nearby mines, but there was never any mention of mines in Saltburn, especially a mine at Hob Hill. The school was next to Hob Hill, and I distinctly remember being told there was nothing underneath Saltburn. How much of the area do we not know about?

Myself and my family visited here today. We heard little children giggling/laughing right beside us. There was definitely no body else there. It was just after my children sat in the bathtub.

Errington Woods used to be my playground in the 1970s. I remember the drift mine entrance-bricked up?-right where you were. There were loads of remnants to be found in the woods back then. Cleveland County Council then obliterated most of it to create the Errington Woods County Park. You had no chance of seeing anything at Hob Hill mainly because it was a short lived, ill fated open cast mine, either side of the current road. The north side became Saltburn's rubbish dump and the south the golf course. The most interesting thing there is that the mining works discovered an anglo saxon cemetery in 1909. Keep up the good work and best wishes.

15:52.. Not sure what these stones are for, seem to be unique to Ravenscar, as they aren’t in Kettleness or Sandsend. Struggling to find any reference online either…

Interesting video, albeit with some confusing comments. Sadly, I find the inlaid photo from the following morning to be a little ghoulish, as two of my friends lost their lives in this tragedy. The name, “Admiral Van Tromp,” came from a famous Dutch Admiral who vowed to sweep the British from the seas, and was chosen by the boat’s owner who happens to be Dutch. He went even further, in that he lashed a broom to her mast as a symbol, going against fishing superstition regarding brooms and fishing equipment.⚓️⚓️

CMHS stick signs up for the public, and make sites even more visible to public by leaving blue tarp everywhere, but they HATE ‘their’ sites being published on social media. Grinkle mine is a classic, might as well put a neon sign up

I can't remember the name of the river it could be the stride? But I recently watched a hiking disaster story about somebody drowning in this river thats in the UK and is labelled as one of the most dangerous rivers in the world. They did a bit of a history lesson about the video and two young lovers in ancient times used to meet by this river, she was from one side of it and he was from the other. Usually they could cross safely for their romantic moonlight rendezvous but on this particular night it had been torrential rain so it was very deep and dangerous and they both jumped in and attempted to meet at the middle and both ended up drowning

Hi is the ss rohilla on the same stretch of beach as the other two wrecks you show in this video? Your video makes them all look within walking distance of each other on the same beach. I know where the concrete ship is and I will be able to find the trawler ok but the medical ship the one I really want to see I don't know where that is?? Its just when I have googled its location it says its inaccessible by foot but in this video it looks like its in the middle of the other two wrecks? Thanks any help would be appreciated please

Back in the 60s schools in Middlesbrough talked about Eston Hills and Iron Ore but not about how far the seam went South. It is the same with Whitby Jet where the seam is sloping under the North Sea. Jet, the Black Jewellery is the remains of Monkey Puzzle Trees, or Chilean Pine (alt. name).

i wondered if you'd find this one. it was surrounded by trees and undergrowth when i was a kid. the tunnel fascinates me. guess i know where we kept losing the dog now! the buildings with the iron grates and the cobbles look familiar, but i didn't realise it was so extensive, and it's been 30 years, so my memory isn't that great :D

i lived near here, and when I was a child, all the roofs were intact. you could hide in there from the rain. I've never seen down the shaft before. It was still far too high to see over without standing on somebody's shoulders (which some of the adults did...)

Interesting video 2x👍 I remember years and years ago my gran took me through the tunnel that is now used by the potash mine. The track goes underground just outside Easington, not far from the Tiger Inn. I can't remember very much but it not a place to go back to now with the trains running.

Have you got any information and have you walked the railway line that curved round from Eston to the other side of the hill then headed towards Guisborough near Flatts Lane? There are sections in place, like for instance by the Cross Keys pub half just under half way between Flatts Lane and Guisborough

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZurcqeFpKprg7c. 5th March 2023. Revisit 7th March 2023 - the first adit ifrom the north portal of Sandsend Tunnel it flooded waist deep at the far end, its blocked by brick and wood ; possibly leading to a vertical drop. The second adit has now been exposed by very very lose shale, and leads onto a small grass plateau. This is showing signs that it will collapse and close the adit on the cliff side. The collapses you mention are from the air shafts above ground, they were just pushed into the tunnel before being capped, three original or shafts were built. Due to bad air, a further two air shafts were built

I’m a Sheffield descended from Ichabod, who was a descendant of John, who was a descendant of Edmund. it’s pretty cool to see ruins that my ancestors built and lived in hundreds of years ago that still stand. It’d be awesome to be able, and visit there some day…and reclaim my rightful throne lol

around the Lyke Wake Walk area...my cousin, Rob Broomfield did it on a number of occasions...and his cremated remains were spinkled at St. Mary's Church Yard at Whitby, in the late 90's or early 2000's.
