Ra’s al Ghul being a member of The Light or working alongside criminals at all never made any sense to me. The mission statement of The League of Assassins/Shadows is to rid the world of what’s poisoning it, i.e. ba guys, be they average or exceptional, so why would he ever do this? Ra’s al Ghul and The League are only antagonists to Batman and his family because their missions and values directly oppose one another, not because The League are conventional bad guys that do team-ups.

I love how he has such a love letter to old school villainy ready for this. XD People tend to forget that while the image of a mustache twirling bad guy tying someone to train tracks has been a parody of evil for a long time (dramatic cape and top hat optional) it's still a someone willing to tie a person down to be HIT BY A TRAIN. Time bombs that look like they belong to a Warner Bros cartoon short are still things decided to EXPLODE and KILL YOU. The gentleman villain archetype is very old, but it's still evil. The image of modern villainy needed to start somewhere and that just happened to be where it began.

You forgot his most badass achievement. By the end of the show, without giving up a shred of his supervillainy, he ends up reconciling with the heroes of the show and gives them back the castle, effectively making him untouchable by them as long as he stays in their good graces. He really does win however he plays it.
