These must be irrigated and well cared for, I have barely been able to keep this species alive in my garden, and none are more than knee high after 5-7 years. It's a shame, because the invasive Eurasian bush honeysuckles grow like gangbusters.

Yes we irrigated the first couple of years and kept the grass away. Last year they handled our 100 year drought just fine and bounced back as good as ever this year!

My beauty, beast, borealis, and tundra tasted sour only. I was very disappointed because I planted them all last year expecting tasty berries after watching your videos! I watered them twice a week. Could it be the cause? How often do you water yours and fertilize yours? Many thanks!
@honeyberryusa2 жыл бұрын
Very sorry to hear you didn't care for them. I presume you did wait for a couple weeks after they turned blue? Taste is subjective. Most people like them but if they don't like them fresh they like them in jam. A little sugar could take the edge off for you. I don't think watering/fertilizing would affect the taste that much. We water younger plants as needed and don't water older plants. We haven't fertilized either.

I'm in zone 3 Edmonton and I've struggled with my Aurora and Borealis plants for years. They're stunted at less than 2 feet height. Nutrient levels and pH are in range and I don't mess with them other than to keep the soil mulched with wood chip. I don't know what's going on with them. Maybe a bad batch?
@honeyberryusa3 жыл бұрын
If the grass is kept at bay at least 2' away from bush they should grow more but you could try scattering 1/2 handful of dry 12-12-12 fertilizer this spring weekly on each side of bush. Also you could throw your kitchen compost on them, they would like that!

Thanks so much for the video from 2 years ago. And this one showing different varieties pretty much full sized at 5-6 years old. Showing the bush shapes was informative, even if I’m mainly anxious for the taste. I just placed an order for some aurora, honey bee, and borealis for zone 5. So psyched to experience their taste and I like your web site, with recipes! I was going to order some haskap jelly, but shipping costs put it up out of my zone, sadly. No worries, I’ll be making my own in a year or two, right?! I look forward to providing a testimonial for these berry plants down the road. Very unique that they are so cold hardy, maintenance free, early fruiting, more nutritious than a blueberry, and you grew yours with little fertilizer. There .... I already have my testimonial started! If you make another video like the one from ~2 years before this video, it would be great for prospective buyers to be told the age of each of the younger plants as you tour the varieties, to give a great picture of the growth progression expectations. That video did mention the ages of some of the plants, but there were some I wanted to know but it wasn’t mentioned. Thanks again!!

2 year update from me: The plants shot up and bushed out a lot this spring. A stem that shot up 2-3’ last year, this year has 12-15 branches up or out from it this year. Kind of exponential growth. Psyched to see a really good harvest next year.

I am from Ukraine and I have planted my first 30 bushes this year! I live in zone 7b and it’s still a mystery to me which varieties will do best. So far it looks like Canadians do (Boreal series, Indigo series). Unfortunately we don’t have Japanese ones in Ukraine that you have. Would love to visit your farm one day!

Jim Ingvaldson Thank you! I ordered more of Aurora:) I have enough pollinators for it already. Can’t wait to try my first berry next year. Do the leaves on your bushes get sunburns often? Mine did during this summer (their first summer in the ground). It was a late planting (June) so half of the plants went dormant. But they’re all alive. I should have planted earlier. Well now I know!
