What an excellent staging! Not really a chorus. I have seen it described as a septet. What a joy for the audience.

Credo che la morte di Carmen, rappresentata da Elina, sia molto ben recitata, tanto da trasmettere anche le emozioni di Carmen: tristezza e rassegnazione.
@Carneades2012
@Carneades2012 28 күн бұрын
“…tristezza e rassegnazione.” ----- “…sadness and resignation.”-You omitted “defiance,” a word for which there seems to be no exact equivalent in the Italian language. Carmen lived as she wanted to live, even if the choices that she made led inevitably-as she knew they would-to her death. That is why, despite all her faults, she is a heroic figure.

Who the hell is Turandot? Absolutely appalling. She would have barely made the chorus before opera deteriorated to this low standard of singing.

I attended this matinee performance too. After seeing 300+ opera performances onstage, I was in shock - “Where has Les Troyens been all my life??” Arguably in the top 10 opera masterpieces. And I loved this performance. Susan Graham and Bryan Hymel were heroic, and Deborah Voigt was damn good in a role not readily associated with her.

1. What is Lohengrin's only weakness? 2. What is the real reason Telramund went to kill Lohengrin in the third act? 3. For what reason did Lohengrin have to marry Elsa? 4. When was the duel between Lohengrin and Telramund? 5. If it is said that Lohengrin's victory in the fight is based on "God's judgment", then what is "God's judgment" based on? 6. Why does Ortrud think that Elsa will suffer her own consequences? 7. Lohengrin can refuse anyone's question, but why can't he refuse Elsa? 8. Where does Lohengrin's divine power come from? Where does the power to keep a secret come from? 9. Lohengrin accused Elsa of betrayal because of being bewitched, so what specific aspects of Elsa's bewitching are manifested? 10. What is the only reward that Lohengrin is willing to sacrifice for Elsa?

The English subtitles seem to be a bit off. At 2:09, "e la piu preciosa" is translated as "not the most precious one". Minor point. OK, it's quite nice. The baritone is awfully woolly, but not dreadfully so. It's boring. Sorry to all you who love it: I don't get it. The notes are all there, but where's the emotion? Gobbi didn't have the "Scarpia voice", but he was the best Scarpia by miles. Just my flawed opinion: you'll doubtless have your favourite, and we're all right.
