My husband & I are rewatching Queer as Folk after several years (we just finished re-watching “The L Word”). It’s true, the show wasn’t perfect for a number of reasons but that doesn’t change the fact that it was revolutionary. This show premiered in late 2000 when I’d just turned 13 & lasted until 2005 when I was 17. I lived in a small Texas town & at age 15 was forced into conversion therapy (thanks to my parents & the now defunct Exodus Int.) Before iPhones & streaming existed I used to wait for my parents to go to bed, sneak into the living room on & watch this with the volume super low & my finger on the remotes “back” button at all times so I could quickly change the channel. QAF was like a little life line to me that reminded me I wasn’t alone in the world. I’ll always be thankful to it’s creators, writers, cast, Showtime etc for taking a chance & making such an edgy show for its time. As odd as it sounds, in a way, this tv show helped keep me alive during an incredibly dark time. I love & have forgiven my parents & they fully accept me & my husband (who my mom now calls “son”) but my heart still goes out to the kids & teens who’re being forced into conversion therapy or worse, conversion “camps”. It needs to be outlawed (at the very least for minors, if not everyone) nationwide. It’s nothing but abuse & barbaric, unscientific pseudo-therapy mixed with hateful religious ignorance. 💚✌🏻💚
