I used to work in the Customs service at Heathrow and there used to be an unofficial "race", the wagon train, from JFK to LHR between TWA, PanAm and British Airways. The VC-10 usually took-off last and overtook the other two in-flight and arrived as much as 1/2 hour ahead.

Note that in the 747-100s from Lufthansa and Scandinavian, the JT9D engines still had those extra inlets that would open or close like on the JT3Ds. Those were eventually abandoned in newer revisions of the JT9D. Also: Many engines like on the VC-10 have, like the 727, exposed reversers where the mechanism for the reversers are fully internal. Unthinkable for today's standards.

It may just be an optical illusion, combined with the greater noise level of the jets of those times, but it sure appears to me that jets landed at higher speeds in those days. Can anybody confirm or deny that?

How sad is it to see how ugly some airlines are painting their jets nowadays? If I had the choice as an airline CEO I would paint my planes with a lot of chrome and a great classical colour choice. Fortunately some airlines know about it and do some Retro Liveries for their planes
@arturocuizon69Ай бұрын
Back before today's airlines like Southwest and JetBlue existed we had all these classic airlines you see in this video like Pan Am TWA Northwest Orient & Continental which are all gone now what a shame cause those were all great airlines.
