I think it's a great city. I lived away for years and always heard how it had gone down the pan. When i came back i was amazed how much better it was. You get a few druggies near sainsbury's and boots but it's got a good friendly vibe and some nice new buildings. It's a big city with a small town feel. I always feel totally safe day or night. Some of the suburbs no, i wouldn't live there but that's the same for all cities. It's distance from the peak district is a real bonus.

Such a shame. I stayed on in Sheffield after leaving university in the mid 80s. Loved the unique feel of the city and this particular place was amazing. For a start I had 6 hours of beginner lessons and bypassed all that going straight to intermediate on day 1 of my first ski holiday. But the place genuinely had an air of a resort in its own right - the buildings all set up as lodges with bars, food, ski shop, equipment hire, T bar lift, coach parties and a special atmosphere under floodlights of the array of slopes of varying difficulty. Loads of fun had. Unbelievable that today when there are more paid for experience type entertainments than ever before that this is no longer available.

It was NEVER called the hole of Sheffield...It was called 'The Hole In the Road'.. The concete construction and methods used to build it were ingenious. The slant made it even better. Then they filled it in and built....Nothing...Awful shame.

I came to Sheffield as a student and never left. Why? The people are warm and friendly, kind and generous. The city centre is not full of chain stores( go to Meadowhall for that). So many trees and Parks. Endcliffe Park, Hillsborough, Bolehill, Graves, Meersbrook, Firth Park, Concord, many more. So many green areas around. Independent businesses setting up. Foodhalls for small businesses. Cutlery works, Kommune, Sheffield plate. There's a make do and mend spirit that I love ❤️

Sheffield is quite small? There's 4-5 different drinking areas btw, West Street is mainly students and early 20s people.

Not all strictly true though. The gas light was powered by the mains gas supply, they lamps did not burn the sewer gas. The heat generated by the gas mantle caused the sewer gas to be drawn up the lamp post by convection so ventilating the sewers, and the 700 Fahrenheit temperature destroyed a lot of the noxious gases. Still connected to the same sewers in use today, although now not needed due to more modern methods of sewer ventilation

It had definitely seen better days by the end, and the Tram that goes over it has been enormously convenient for the city (did you know that the Council initially drew up plans for an elevated monorail, which would have allowed the Hole to stay?) but still...I sort of miss it. It was our own little subterranean shopping precinct, with a huge fish tank built into the wall. It had character and I was sad to see it go.

It wasn't that crime ridden, there was some anti social behaviour, the drunks used to gather on the benches sometimes to keep out of the rain as it was under shelter but generally they were no bother. It was generally an ok place during the daytime, sometimes there was the smell of pee in places after a Friday or Saturday night. I rarely went through there late at night l, maybe a couple of times but I don't remember it being that threatening of a place.

In reality it isn't a pothole, it is an aven that has been dug into from the surface. Not natural just another Derbyshire mud hole.

As a born and bred Sheffielder, the city centre is a shithole! Inappropriate developments over the last 70 years or so has seen what was once probably the most impressive Victorian city in the U.K. turned into a mish mash of inhuman ad hoc buildings serviced by roads that go nowhere. The city centre seems to be no more than an experimental place for university architecture students to have their ridiculous designs brought to fruition and to give university so called ‘art’ students the brutalist blank canvasses for them to scrawl their graffiti on. Of course it’s not all bad; the Peace Gardens and Winter Gardens are a triumph, the Midland Station concourse is a pleasant space and the recent Grey to Green planting is an absolute joy to walk through but you really have to get out to the hilly suburbs, parks and countryside to appreciate the best of the city and what the city centre needs to aspire to to reach its full potential!
