This is a lovely production, and I'm especially pleased they included the full scene between Cinderella and Alidoro, and Alidoro's full aria. For some reason that part is often cut short.

Fun facts: Mozart put a few jokes in the banquet scene 2:29:22 "Bravi, Cosa Rara" - that was a popular tune at the time, by another composer called Martin and that Mozart didn't really admire. When Don Giovanni asks "What do you think of this song" and Leporello answers "it's worthy of you" - that's a way to insult both Don Giovanni and Martin. 2:30:53 "Viva la liberta" - actually mean Long live Freedom (the subtitles are wrong). It was a sentence that was often pronounced by the peasants who wanted to overturn monarchy, namely in France, where they succeeded 2 years after the opera was first played. It's a way to hijack their motto and have it pronounced by someone who sees freedom as a way to act like a pig. A modern-day equivalent would be an African dictator committing atrocities while yelling Black Lives Matter 2:31:40 When Leporello says "I know this song", this is a reference to the Wedding of Figaro, the opera that Mozart had written just a few years before this one, and who was very popular in Prague. Also, the actor playing Leporello was the same one who also played Figaro, so obviously he would know this song well.

In what country is Queen City, please? Also, how can a woman be a son-in-law? Is this a lesbian interpretation?
@QueenCityOperaQCOАй бұрын
In the United States! Cincinnati is the 'Queen City." In that scene, Leonora is disguised as Fidelio in order to get a job at the prison without revealing her true identity, and the other characters believe that she is male; Marzelline (the other Soprano role) falls in love with Fidelio, believing him to be male. Thank you for watching, and please consider subscribing!
@Jean-rg4spАй бұрын
@@QueenCityOperaQCO Thank-you for your courteous and swift reply. I know almost nothing about opera. The disguise is not convincing. I came here because I read this evening about how historian Joachim Fest first heard this opera during WWII when he was a schoolboy and how unimpressed he was. I also read that Hitler thought it was dreadful even though it was played during the years of the Third Reich.
@QueenCityOperaQCOАй бұрын
@@Jean-rg4sp Of course! We love opera, and we are happy to share info! Indeed, there is an operatic convention of so-called "pants" roles, which are male characters sung by female voices. Mozart used this convention a lot, especially in his comedies, so I think Beethoven was expected to nod to this convention in some way, and his approach was to have a female character pretending to be male, fooling the other characters on stage, but not the audience, who already knows her true identity, and is thus in on the humorous opening to what is otherwise a very heavy opera. The piece is very peculiar both dramatically and musically. It has some excellent material and moments, but I think it is not as central to the repertoire as the works of Mozart or Beethoven. But it still is worth engaging with and listening to once in a while.
@mithramastropierro485322 күн бұрын
@@Jean-rg4sp Why would anyone ever care what Hitler thought of anything that Beethoven did? Or Joachim Fest for that matter? Who made either of them any sort of authority on art? And the point is not how good does Leonore disguise herself as a man…The point is that she is a woman going beyond anything anyone thought is humanly possible to save her love, her husband and fight for justice. Furthermore, could Marzelline have lesbian tendencies? Why not? Lesbians existed back then as well as now. The fact is she doesn’t like Jacquino…she is drawn to feminine strength. Beethoven, his music, his life is considered German, as are the works of Schiller. They believed in the noble soul of humanity, which in some cases cannot be corrupted. The heroes of the White Rose might have been motivated by Beethoven and his idealistic ideas. They too were Germans…Schiller and Beethoven were able to express this with their art. The Scholl siblings had to pay for it with their lives. Of course someone like Hitler could never understand that, he manipulated a whole people into committing the worst atrocities without even the tiniest thought about true human values…yet Fidelio still exists, Beethoven survived, the German people survived and learned…Yet Hitler and his 3rd Reich: not so much…and noone cares about Joachim Fest either…for that matter…
