That is so much unnecessary work. Especially 20 yrs down the road when the next guy has to come level your 3 foot thick foundation. All you need is an 18 × 48 ×3 concrete prefab or granite foundation

3” of concrete to support a stone that may weigh 1000-2000 pounds, in an area that encounters frost in the winter? That’s absolutely stupid thinking

@brandon18054 I made headstones in Winnipeg for 10 years. Uprights always went on a pre fab concrete foundation on a 4 inch thick granite foundation. In the last 20 yrs I've made and installed over 10,000 uprights and guess what? They are all still standing.

The actual grave is too far from the headstone. . Why do ya'll do it like that? They don't do that here in Arkansas. . The middle of the headstone is directly in the middle of the 2 graves (husband/wife). If it's just one person, then the head stone is centered. . . . Missouri is dumb

You don’t use y12 rio bar in ur wholes ? And f8 trench mesh, and no sand and screenings, just concrete and water, America does it heaps different (also why not use an hand borer, makes the holes nice and around 6 inches big much easier to bore ur holes that way)

As the guy that trims around 800 markers in a local cemetery, I really wish NOTHING grew within 2 inches of that marker. String trimming 800 markers AFTER mowing the entire place is some serious walking. Oddly, at 58, I prefer working in Cemeteries since they are far more challenging than cutting empty lots. What DID I do for a real living? Software Design Engineer. Free at last from the boring desk job... Sad story: My boss is a master of hitting stones with the mower blade and backing into them, tipping them over. He hates the place and I'm trying my best to STEAL the contract from him, mainly due to his neglect and damage. Mowing and trimming are both done early in the morning when the grass has enough turgor and moisture content to make the cut easier. After the Florida sun has cooked that grass, it will just lay over, and not cut properly. Afterwards, I strap on a huge leave blower and grab a garbage picker stick so I can put things back on the marker after accidentally blowing them off. I HATE ALL THE TRINKETS people leave on the markers. Wind knocks them over and they break, THEN I gotta pick up this !!!! mess, or my boss will grind it up and throw glass everywhere. All done. Mr. Brown North Central Florida

As a grieving parent, I apologize for those 'trinkets' that make your job so much harder... I truly wish that I didn't have to leave trinkets on my childs gravestone. I would so much prefer to be able to have given them to him in person these last 10 years, but that option was taken from me. Also, sorry that you seem to feel that those 'trinkets' are there only to make your life/job so much harder. Hopefully you don't have to experience leaving trinkets to your loved ones
@cloudbase7799

Leaving trinkets on a loved one's gravestone is for the benefit of the one leaving trinkets. It does nothing for the loved one that passed. Keep their memory alive by doing good/kind deeds for someone living, in memory of the deceased loved one.

This is common practice when a husband or wife passes away before their spouse. I'm guessing more common for older people / empty nesters. Probably not common for someone likely to remarry...? That could be awkward.
