Hydrogen peroxide is a fantastic disinfectant especially when youre disinfecting fragile things. It’s my go to disinfectant when doing tissue culture. With tissue culture, it’s vital to completely sterilize plant tissue without killing the plant tissue. Peroxide has always proven to be the least invasive but in my experience, also the most effective.

Even in the wild, per few acres, ALL wild rabbits are inbred. Rabbits have very small area of their whole entire lives, and they dont get to buy a train ticket to a different area. So - within an any given area, they are ALL related. The ones with wrong recesive genes simply dont make it. Become food for others. Only the best survive long enough to breed. Thanks for the grooming lesson. Advice- work with wet hands but have a bucket ready for quick rinses- works for me.

Is it same for broody hen or it's alright to not clean the egges with a broody hen?
@ElbonMillFarm
@ElbonMillFarm 5 ай бұрын
No. Eggs left under a broody hen are exposed to bacteria unlike eggs hatched in a sterile incubator. So they need to keep the bloom or cuticle as a protective barrier to bacteria. This only works for eggs in sterile environments.

I had the same scenario 2 days ago. All kits had empty bellies, so I brought the doe in as well. By morning, the survivors all had full bellies from nursing. I transitioned the group to a shed the next night. Then this morning I moved the group back to the doe's cage/nest.

We just lost our first litter and I tried your techniques. If I found them sooner I’m sure they would’ve survived. She had a pretty good nest with fur and used that and a blanket vs the box I had for her. We had a cold snap so I think it was that because the day before she was feeding them and they were crying and jumping around:( hard to tell with it being her first though because some were pushed out of the near and she was just taking care of one. How long after the loss do you breed again? I have other rabbits but I want to give her another chance after her loss. And also, do you bring them indoors when it’s colder? Or use a heat lamp? Thanks
@ElbonMillFarm
@ElbonMillFarm 10 ай бұрын
Sorry about your loss 🙁Depending on why I bred her in the first place, I will often breed again just a couple days after she loses the litter if she’s interested. I don’t normally bring them inside during the winter. If I know I have does due during a super cold snap, like less than 20F, I may bring her into an unheated building until after she kindles just to be sure they don’t freeze before she finishes giving birth. But I’ll move them back out once she’s done and they’re warm and fed.

By the way I have 10 laying hens and 1 rooster all White Leghorn. My incubator is one of those yellow ones that turns the eggs for you and I think it holds 120 chicken eggs...but I plan to just try with about 40 or 50 eggs since we have already collected enough eggs for eating. I too am looking forward to your response.

@@ElbonMillFarm Thank you. My first attempt last year was such a dismal failure that I didn't dare try it again...I had 1 dozen eggs and only 3 hatched...2 males and 1 female. Hopefully this time is better. I would be thrilled with a 50% hatch rate.

@elliottspence7929 Жыл бұрын
@@ElbonMillFarm it appears as if I am having a very good hatch rate. But I am curious...What criteria do you use so that you know when to remove the chicks from the incubator? The first 2 started hatching 2 nights ago. And they are still hatching even now.

OK I just pulled a bunch of eggs this morning and I am going to wash them and use peroxide. So what kind of environment do you store the eggs while you're waiting to fill up the incubator? Can I store them in a room type environment or is it better to put them in the sanitized incubator even though I am not starting for at least a few more days. Appreciate the knowledge you are sharing here.

So refreshing to see an actual real life vid, not some airy fairy "we livin the dream" thing by wanna be's. I've travelled through Asia a lot, chickens everywhere, and not an anti biotic/tick/whatever, treatment in sight. I run a "heritage" breed, I made the mistake of going to a "poultry show" ye gods those things wouldn't last 5 min's at my place, Sure I lose the odd one to eagles (usually the rooster defending his girls) and every now and then one gets sick (and dies, with no trip to the vet) survival of the fittest. Harsh? depends on your point of view. Mine are old school multi purpose, lay quite a few eggs (not a heap) and have enough meat to make a good roast chook (not a big lump of breast meat) but the flavour is what chicken used to taste like. I love it, the kids complain about the lack of white tasteless "breast" that they are accustomed to, ahh such is life.
