With all the seeming variety of variants, there are very few actual original karate. It is foolish to start from the number of groups. They cannot offer anything new yet. The last mega Master was Asai Tetsuhiko - the others just shift the technique from hand to hand. Fundamentally changing only the issues of priorities and preferences. Even such sensei as Abe, Tamang, Ochi, Enoeda or Kagawa did not bring anything fundamentally new to karate. They only constantly demonstrated themselves, their previously recruited technique and the capabilities that their body gave them. With the death of Asai, Kase, Nishiyama, innovators are almost gone, and just now there are no Japanese.

Excuse me for saying this but this looks more like Asai karate than ISKF. My guess is that, following the death of Asai Sensei, this gentleman had to decide 'what's best for me' and opted away from Kato, opted away from Kagawa and instead went with Okazaki.

Bill Blinky and? what's is your point ? he must be with IJKA , JKS for practice Asai karate ?
@BelloBudo0078 жыл бұрын
No that's not my point at all. It is simply that if he's the representative of the ISKF, which I am guessing he is, that I would expect to see something that promotes the ISKF way as opposed to the various other Shoto ways . He is of course free to do what ever he wants to do.

Bill Blinky can you explain what is the ISKF way?

Nice trick to get back to the initial position, but may be, you should just make a longer jump? I don't think pivoting on the spot from Kiba-Dachi to Zenkutsu-Dachi is correct.

I have been doing shotokan over 25 years (black belt), and other styles. Why in all these demos is the attacker doing only one technique and then freezing while the sensei counterattacks multiple times?

Clearly this was in the day of the legal battle for the right to the JKA name. Some wonderful karate by all present. Sadly the world has lost Asai Sensei, Kato Sensei has gone onto be his own man again (like a Ronin of karate) and Kagawa Sensei is now the boss of the JKS, and doing a wonderful job by all accounts.

Lovely kicking & distance by Kato. Obviously this was from a time when the JKA dispute was raging. In one way it's a shame the JKA split because now there's even more division with JKA (Ueki), JKS (Kagawa), KWF (Yahara), JSKA (Abe), IJKA (Kato) and NSKF (Pemba). But in another way the world now has more high quailty Shotokan groups thinking about karate and developing their own ideas. I've trained with all groups and they all have much to offer.

@Ronin6575 What a very strange thing to say. You are obviously not familiar with Asai Ryu and their kata forms and therefore speak from ignorance. However think about what you just said. Is not all kata a sequence of techniques strung together. Just because you don't recognise this form does not mean it is not a true kata. I suggest you seek out and watch Tetshiko Asai Sensei kata - watch and weep. He was one of a kind.

Good kata, but very rushed. I'm not sure anyone in that class learnt a thing. Shame because that man obviously has alot to teach. I may have got it wrong - perhaps he went on to explain. But jugding by the students they were playing catch up.
