The Manoppello image is a medieval European painting on a transparent fabric. It may have been based on a Mandylion icon. "Veronica" is not a jewish name, and is most likely a conflation of the Latin words, "vera" and "iconica" which were used to describe icons of the Mandylion. The Byzantines invented a story to explain the origin of the Mandylion, and they included that story along with their vera iconica exports to the West. The legend of Veronica's Veil is not found in Scripture and only appeared in the 11th century. However, it has become so ingrained in Catholic culture that, even though the learned know that it is not true, it cannot be removed from Station Six of the Stations of the Cross.

Se sul velo sono presenti tracce di colla allora è ragionevole pensare che sia un dipinto, ad esempio un tüchlein. Se così non fosse come si spiega la presenza di residui di colla nel tessuto? Il tüchlein è una tecnica pittorica su tela di lino (tüch = tessuto, lein = lino) del periodo medievale. Il tessuto veniva dipinto con la "tempera" ma in realtà questo era un termine generico usato per indicare i pigmenti sciolti nell'acqua e legati al supporto prevalentemente da colla animale, a volte albume d'uovo o gomma. Questa tecnica creava una superficie opaca (come appunto quella del velo di Manoppello) con la trama del tessuto che rimane evidente. Le tüchleins non avevano un rivestimento protettivo né una vernice e il tessuto di solito non veniva neppure preventivamente trattato prima di dipingerlo. La mancanza sia di imprimitura che di rivestimento protettivo hanno reso le tüchleins più vulnerabili, più facilmente deteriorabili e infatti sono sopravvissuti solo pochi esemplari. Con le tüchleins non si usava il colore bianco perchè si sfruttava il colore di fondo del supporto ossia il bianco del tessuto di lino

Here is my well çonsidered opinion about the origin of the face of Jesus on this veil: plausibly, it is the imprint produced by the risen Jesus (at God's right hand) on the plain material of this veil when this veil was placed over the imprint of the crucified face of Jesus on His burial shroud, the sindona (now in Turin) in the presence of King Agbar of Edessa to show him that the burial shroud of Jesus, the sindona, brought to him by Jesus's disciple was indeed his burial shroud, and expressing the immeasurable suffering of excruciating passion on the imprint of his holy face on this veil from his holy shroud for King Agbar and his people to see and cherish as a perpetual remembrance and as a gift in fulilment of the promise made to him through his emissary during his public ministry before his holy passion for the redemption and salvation of all those who come to which clearly included King Agbar and his people who had already believed in him even before his passion. This not the cloth spoken of in st.John's gospel according to there was (unlike the face cloth of lazar)no face cloth on the face of Jesus. Carnagione chiara, capelli e barba lunghi e un po' brizzolati . Vestiva un abito Cafcano bianco argento ed un cappello alto dello stesso colore. Ci siamo guardati a lungo. Le Sue mani erano appoggiate una sull'altra, sul ventre. Allora non ero ancora a conoscenza di molte cose...........ma ricordandoLo, mi venne in mente il ragazzo che era alla Sua dx e di fronte a me : prima di andare verso mio marito, mi sono rivolta al ragazzo chiedendogli sotto voce chi fosse. Lui, chinandosi leggermente verso me con le braccia semi aperte fece un'espressione di stupore come per ,dirmi : come non l'hai conosciuto? The difference between the beard and head hair are a little darker compared to this and head hair lay on the top of his shoulder and the beard not as it looks like this not triangle in front , I can say over 80% similarity

The Holy Face of Manoppello is NOT the Veronica. This is the one found in the tomb testifying Jesus's Resurrection.

If you take a copy of the image and bend it as if you are wrapping around a milkshake cup the face takes on a normal appearance and it was bent around the face when the cloth was laid over the face. You see the broken cheekbone beneathe his right eye and the plucked beard and moustache.

Before you comment, please do some investigating. This image is not the Veil of Veronica. This is the second cloth, or third, placed over the head of Jesus in the tomb. It matches perfectly to the Holy Shroud of Turin, and is only visible when a flashlight, or other light source is placed against it. There is no pigment, or blood on the cloth. It is absolutely not a painting. It is an image of Jesus, as it shows the mose was struck by something, as on the Holy Shroud, the beard was plucked, and blood stains on the face itself.
