Great videos with lots of information. Great customer car! I watched your RSR team up video about a trip to the Nurburgring and Spa Francorchamps, and those events seem like the cars are owned by RSR and the participants do not need to own or bring their expensive track cars, but in these videos it seems like your North American events all of the people are using their own cars. Is this the case, or do you have cars which can be rented for the events?

I'd say braking is the MOST important aspect in going fast with a car. If you don't get your braking points right then you'll lose. Braking at the right moment is the be-all and end-all of going fast around a racetrack, anyone can go fast in a straight line but it's the braking points where time is won and lost.

I am confused, not with the technique, but with the sequence, cause I've the sequence ordered differently and keep wondering if the way i am doing it is correct. I am not sure if it's the way my mind is seeing it, but I've seen this sequence done differently, were people blip first then downshift, i am not sure if the order matters or if there is a correct way to do this.
@David-ud9ju5 жыл бұрын
As long as you blip before releasing the clutch, it's not really going to matter, but it's best to do it after you've selected the gear. If you blip, then select the gear, the revs may have already fallen back down to what they were before the blip.

How do you downshift on the track without using this technique? My 1st time on the track I could get this about half the time so the instructor just told me to keep the car in 3rd gear. Isn't there anyway to downshift on the track without doing this?
@filopride6199 жыл бұрын
+maxpowers3732 I believe it's crucial that you become competent with this technique as it really is the most efficient way to downshift on the track. It just takes time, practice and practice.

i usually clutch ~> downshift ~> throttle I brake when i need to but whenever the rpm is around 1500, i rev and down shift without the need of braking.
@c.h.taylor6549 жыл бұрын
justin94block that's how a lot of people do it. It is not recommended however bc u are putting a lot of strain on your transmission. Brakes are cheaper than transmission. Use your brakes.
@beetfarmer89339 жыл бұрын
C.H. Taylor This might be great for track cars. But like you said, transmissions are expensive and for a daily driver, just use your brakes. :D

A friend of mine once said this was a precursor to drifting. Is that true?
@xiiisjive10 жыл бұрын
absolutely, when drifiting one of the easiest ways to initiate a drift is by simply turning in, braking, and then using the accelerator to brake traction of the rear tires. in order to do this you need to be able to brake and downshift to stay in the optimal powerband of the engine at exactly the same time. without heel toe this would be very difficult
@thaik5610 жыл бұрын
"Advanced technique" they say, I've pretty much mastered it on the street and I haven't even been to the track once. I'm not bragging, just saying that this technique isn't that hard to master, anyone can with practice.
@xiiisjive10 жыл бұрын
it really isn't at all! you just have to understand the basic fundamentals and practice. there will be many over revs, under revs and grinded gears but with practice anyone can be a master in no time! i learned by watching the drift bible! :)

Great introduction to learning a track. Sharing again to SouthWest MotorSport for new drivers & students!
@Khazar0110 жыл бұрын
I learned this in 2 phases. Phase 1 was learning how to precisely rev match the engine when you down shift without braking. So basically you go rather slowly in a higher gear, and you downshift while doing the throttle blip without even touching the brake. For this you need to go slow so the engine won't over rev once the downshift is completed. So once you know the correct timing and the exact amount of "blip" you need, you need to go to phase 2, which is basically practicing how to press the brake and the gas pedal in the same time. You can do this even while you're standing still for a start. And as you become comfortable with it, continue doing it while driving. And the most important thing is, the more you do it, the better you become
@XVIIIMCMLXXXVIII10 жыл бұрын
This is really just braking and rev matching right, because the clutch it still fully depressed?? Isn't it more gentle on the input and layshaft to do a double clutch down shift whilst braking, which means that you bite the clutch to rev match whilst out of gear, allowing all the gearbox components to synchronize, then re-engage the clutch to down shift?
@Hookedondriving10 жыл бұрын
yes, but today's gearboxes don't need a double clutch...but synchronizing the driveline is a primary goal, but don't forget saving the rear end hardware too
@XVIIIMCMLXXXVIII10 жыл бұрын
Hookedondriving That makes sense. I may have to practice the simpler version too. I'm definitely going to continue to double clutch heel toe for the sake of my beetles 60yr old gearbox though :)

I think the theory here is doing it with the ball of your feet and rocking sideways will give you better and more constant brake pressure. However, I disagree with the way this technique is taught. I'm no racing professional, but I get by just fine using the brake pedal with the entire ball of my foot, and rocking my heel sideways, pivoting on the ball, to jab the gas. Its not so much my heel, but the side of it. I just don't think this is as consistent as the other, more "traditional" way i've described above. It seems like your foot could easily slip off the gas pedal if you aren't careful, and this could cause you to lose control or hit someone else if you're out on the track...
@jwheelerjr00010 жыл бұрын
A lot of this comes down to the way the pedals are positioned. For some cars you may have to get your foot almost sideways to manipulate throttle and brake simultaneously, in other others such as my C4 there's no room to do such a thing.
@nosalis10 жыл бұрын
my problem is that the way I'm used to shift, I'm having a hard time shifting the gear (and releasing the clutch) but at the same time doing the blip basically the co-ordination of moving my right hand,right foot while also releasing the left foot , and of course I don't want to damage my car, so I don't really practice it a lot .. oh well
@Hookedondriving10 жыл бұрын
Blip comes just a flash before the release of clutch...its a sequence....
@rajgill757611 жыл бұрын
@mardamek he used porche 911 as a rear engine car, not rear wheel drive. thats why they keep saying weight at the back of the car etc, not because of weight transfer by throttle, but because the big hunk of metal (engine) is in the boot
@SUP3RJ3W11311 жыл бұрын
I feel your pain. In my B5 S4 the accelerator pedal is pretty far to the right hand side of the car, which makes it hard for me to hit the gas without the transmission tunnel/firewall getting in the way.
@weekendtoyz111 жыл бұрын
I always though i was doing it wrong as always used the side of my foot rather than heel and toe, good to see it explained the way i do it. Great tip on floor mounted pedals, had a golf with one of those, found it such a pain.
@mardamek11 жыл бұрын
He didn't simply say the same for all three drivetrains. He just used an odd example of an rwd car by referring to the 911. A classic rwd car will most likely benefit from some throttle application mid-corner since that helps bring the rear end around. Of course, the driver still has to know/feel how much throttle is right, otherwise the car may end up oversteering - aka spinning around.
