He is definitely mistaken when he says “gift tax.” I’m 99.9% sure he’s talking about income tax on the vehicle. When you win a prize, you have to claim the prize as income. The Jeeps value is $50k, so during tax season, he’s gotta report $50k on top of his regular income, which you have to pay taxes on. The percentage of the income tax depends on your income. Hope this clears everything up!

Yes, you have to pay the tax, and that does suck. But the tax is per your state. So like in Louisiana, my state tax is only 4.45, but then my parish (county) tax is another 4%. So 8.45%. However, Louisiana doesn’t have a gift tax. The federal gift tax is anything over 15,000 but the person whom receives the gift, doesn’t pay that. Google is your friend: The gift tax only kicks in after lifetime gifts exceed $11.58 million in 2020 The first thing to know about the federal gift tax is that gift givers-not gift recipients-have to pay it. Thankfully, you won’t owe the tax until you’ve given away more than $11 million in cash or other assets during your lifetime. The lifetime exclusion was raised to $11.58 million in 2020. If you’re married, your spouse is entitled to a separate $11.58 million in 2020. So, actually owing the gift tax is not a concern for most folks. But you may still have to file gift tax returns even though you don’t owe any tax.
