I would never bring dagger along sword w¨hen facing spear - you just restricted yourself from catching opponents weapon. Of course, spear is easy to handle weapon but also the skillcap is quite low while you can study swordfighting for decades.

Thanks for posting. I have never fought Will. He must have a very strong grip. It was interesting to see you manage the range here. I bet his advantage would be much greater outside where he would have more room to handle the range. How do his swords feel in the bind? They seem very flexy, so they'd be hard to get in a bind, or with a beat. He looks like fun fight, and certainly a puzzle. That rising left handed shot is wicked, and looks like the rising shot you teach with sword refused.
@millicentrowan7 ай бұрын
Deth is straight up the best fencer in the East. Even in an open area, he controls the range and is difficult to kill. The best thing anyone can do is to fight their best fight, applying pressure and defending themselves with footwork. Expecting to get a bind on him is very tough, and usually is just done by parrying one of his attacks. Don't expect to bind both. He told me that I was too close here, so I was applying pressure but standing close enough that he didn't have to reach which put me at a disadvantage.

If you could perhaps narrate what is going on (like strategies, guards, attacks, ect.) it would make it far better for someone like me to watch

I could do that! I admit I put a lot of these videos up for my coach who lives out of state to critique. I'll narrate a couple of good videos and post them though, great suggestion!

Interesting to see you fight with rigid parry. Do you have more than one? I am used to seeing textured ones with hooks or forks. I would think this one being smooth would be harder to bind with. If this is one you fight with a lot, why have you made that choice?
@millicentrowan7 ай бұрын
Well... I broke my dagger. Then I broke my normal rigid parry. Then I took this one from a lumber pile, and broke it.
@millicentrowan7 ай бұрын
However, I do recommend a simple, light, smooth stick to fight with. No hooks, no texture, no extra weight

Based on the video...your particular practice of SCA cut and thrust you guys are not aiming to the mask?? Also when you say...classically trained..what do you mean with that?
@millicentrowan8 ай бұрын
We are actually not talking about cut and thrust. Yes, we aim for the mask. Classically trained in this context is referring to how most sca fencers start new people.

Good video and great points. As someone who does a LOT of blade work, binding, gaining, thrusts in opposition, etc. the idea of closing a line is not necessarily to hit your opponent in a single tempo. Instead, it is a way to cover their weapon as you enter measure so that they have to take an action to hit you on a different line or to escape the danger. While they take the action you can hit them somewhere else, and if they don’t react at all you hit them in opposition on the next tempo while you are IN measure. It is easier to do with a dagger because once you can gain their sword with a dagger you are already in measure and can hit them in the same tempo. If you gain with the sword, it’s always a two tempo action when done “properly.” IE the classic way is you do the small gain/line closure and then step into measure while maintaining the advantage. If your opponent reacts as you land in measure, you hit them in the middle of their reaction (ideally) or seek a new advantage. If they do nothing then keep the advantage as you thrust in opposition. It’s always tempo 1: gain and step into measure, tempo 2: hit them (as long as they don’t retreat) either as they do nothing, or during their action (a parry, a disengage, etc), or at least seek a new advantage to make them react to and hit them as they react to THAT. TLDR: gaining the blade and thrusting in opposition are done “properly” in two tempi not one. The point of gaining is to force a reaction-not to just always thrust in opposition on the next tempo-and hit as they react. You can gain with the sword and force an action from further away but with a dagger it must be done closer and the closer measure means you can hit in that same tempo.

Thanks for posting! There's a lot to think about here. I like your suggestion to think like a boxer, where both hands can defend. What is "stringering multiple lines" that you talk about at 6:40?
@VonTolstatFightClub8 ай бұрын
You can close a line with your dagger (stringere) and close a different line with your sword at the same time.
@millicentrowan8 ай бұрын
People use the term stringering when they are blocking the fastest/most direct line that their opponent can take, without actually touching their opponent's blade.

@gassygorilla47676 ай бұрын
@@millicentrowan Please do, I'm not entirely sure which company makes the best rapier, I don't have any budget constraints so I'd prefer to get the best of the best. I took an intro course last month and I prefer the blade to be more stiff and not so flexible.

@gassygorilla4767 my favorite is to get a castile blade, and a darkwood guard. Either store for pommel and grip.

What is this? Is this a competitive sport or a fantasy/reenactment type thing?
@ohgodswordsmaybe9 ай бұрын
This is rapier fencing in the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), and a recreation of dueling in antiquity. Strikes to head and torso are considered 'dead' and strikes to limbs disable the limb, like switching the sword to your other hand if struck in the sword hand, or sitting down or kneeling if struck in the leg. It's up to the person receiving the strike to deem it valid, and there can be conversation between partners as to the quality of strikes received. Additionally, the organization is divided by regions (kingdoms) and rules can vary slightly per kingdom. It's also a hobby for collecting hobbies, and fencing is only a small portion of it. There are other martial disciplines, and various forms of crafting and art under the umbrella of historical recreation.
@millicentrowan9 ай бұрын
This is a huge regional practice, and usually we wear period appropriate clothing, but the sword style we're doing is medieval sport fencing.
