It's simple. It was just rock music that didn't follow the hair metal that was popular on the radio and MTV. Lots of times the term was used to describe bands that had things to say about politics and culture more than regular rock music too.

Some time back I watched a KZbin video from a Luthier who was commissioned by Prince to make a cloud bass, I can't remember if he was the guy that made the cloud guitars for Prince, but he was part way through the build when Prince passed, I can't remember his name or what he intended to do with it once it was finished ? He explained what Prince wanted, the specs and how he built it !! It looked pefect, shame Prince never got to see it 😢

Beverly was a “female hero” (trying not to have comment removed) @ddivt as well as Sid, and he’d asked her to go out and get some. She did he took it, wanted more, did that too, and then got some that was almost pure, that he did when he was back at his hotel room, and was found the next morning
