What ruins this is that instead of just singing and showing someone else playing the piano, she's making a really bad attempt to pretend she's playing it- the lid is down, her feet aren't moving the pedals and there are no side shots of her hands. She should just have the balls to show she really doesn't play it.

They are all terrific actors and entertain us ...but they are also all too human......and really the hero worshipping is too much.....and the exhorbitant fees they get ....is just getting rediculous... giving the state of the world ..and hunger etc...

If you’re from Morecambe you have two choices: you either go bird watching on the bay or become one of the greatest comedy acts this country has ever known. I have a vision of Victoria and Eric keeping God himself in tears of laughter, making heaven a little bit more heavenly. I doubt I'll see them, but where I’m going we will have Dave Allen.

I really paid attention to the piano playing , it was superb. So good i find it hard to believe it was her. Barely looked at the keys, even during the more distant key strikes. Would love to seen a shot of her hands on the keys. Timing was brilliant

Very brave of Catherine Tate to show herself up like this. She hasn’t even 1% of Victoria Wood’s talent, like ability or even singing voice. Would much rather watch a repeat of VW, this was a waste of time and not a patch on the original.

I havent watched it yet...but this is brave. Barry and Freda is so iconically Victoria Wood. Musically this would be the equivalent of covering Bohemian Rhapsody...lets see how this goes... ...yeah. As homage to Victoria it's fine, and I'm sure Catherine had a great time doing it. But as a performance, it's not even close. Maybe it's because Catherine doesn't play the piano, or maybe the style doesn't suit her, but the delivery just didn't work for me. In her defence, it's possible Victoria couldn't pull off "Am I bovvered though?" in a Lancashire accent!

Mixed feelings about this: POSITIVE: There are people on here saying that the song is not difficult to play on the piano. That would be true if it didn't keep changing key every few verses. I've had a go at this piano part myself and it's more demanding than you think because of those key changes - it goes up in key from F-G-Ab-A-Bb in the version I did. I think this version has fewer key changes than the original but it still has enough to be awkward. NEGATIVE: The fact that we never see a shot of Ms Tate's hands is the giveaway that she's most probably not playing the piano herself. If she was, then why didn't the director show us her fingers in action? POSITIVE: Even just singing it though, those key changes are difficult to follow, and it must have taken a lot of practice to get both the key changes and timing right even singing along to someone else's piano playing. NEGATIVE: Maybe Tate was focusing on remembering the words without bursting into laughter and losing her place, but her performance feels a bit detached from the subject matter. Victoria Wood's original performance, she had the characters in her head when she sang, Catherine Tate didn't - although there are so many verses and so many key changes, it's impossible. CONCLUSION: I believe Catherine Tate's performance was a respectful tribute, but it could never be the equal of the original. I doubt anything ever could, although in my musical circle I know a married couple who could give it a fair stab. When I mentioned it to them a few years back they suggested that such a thing would require a separate narrator/pianist and promptly suggested me for the job. This was a while ago and I think we'd all forgotten about it until now. I might suggest it to them again and see what happens.

Look. You can pull a Steinway up on stage and place it at a 45 degree angle away from the audience. You can instruct the camera crew to pretend the actual hands on the actual keyboard simply don't exist. But the feet on those pedals don't lie. Catch yourself on.

The funniest line is about melting the buttons on the flame proof nightie. The whole song was hilarious when Victoria Wood released it but that back then seemed to be the icing on the cake beating the bending backwards on the hostess trolley.
@grahamd37126 ай бұрын
Is she playing the piano? Just curious as you never see her hands playing the keys. Pianists generally are side on to the audience and the camera would show the keys being played on occasions.
