Awesome video, thanks! I live in Morton bay, have watched your videos since the beginning and would love to sail away up the QLD coast soon. New farm is the trendy area where house prices have skyrocketed recently I’ve never explored there but it looks nice. How big is your water tank? Do you think it is big enough for your needs or would you change it if you built it again?

These are good feet on the ground (ocean) reminders. I was surprised that you didn't put standing rigging up there with new sales and vane. You're right of course. Everyone likes the idea of a watermaker and shedloads of solar and batteries.

If the standing rigging needs to be replaced it’s an obvious must do.

Yes their lives where hard but those ships were massive and no where near as rough in motion as a small boat and there were like 90 people per ship to share all the work

Love your ending message dude! Passing on to my family - I preach hard work over talent (or smarts or money, etc) to my 5 and 3 year old who are much more privileged than I was. To me what you are saying embodies the message I want to deliver to my children - thanks! 😃

Mate, a million bullshit artists on YT sitting in hired supercars, fake aircraft and spouting shallow platitudes. And then there is you, and maybe a handful like you, that didn’t have a dad with an emerald mine or mum was the MD of a Fortune 500 but you genuinely created your future with courage. Vale, you are a modern day inspiration and hero.

Ever since I was a young boy I've always wanted to do this, I just never got around to learning how to sail. Now I'm middle aged, out of shape and have kids, not complaining just saying that doing something like this is a lot easier when you're young. It's cliche but if your a young person who wants to tackle something like this then go do it, tomorrow never comes.

@@SailorJames Ah aha yeah on a second reading it does sound like I was saying you are young. I figured I we were roughly the same age. I was more just speaking in general that when you're younger it's easier to pick up and sail across the world as you have less responsibilities generally. Also, I get what you're saying and you're correct, I shouldn't give up on this because of my age.

Thanks for the video, very informative but I’m a bit confused why did you need the drogue in the first place if you had a wind vane that has its own rudder? I’m actually thinking of getting the Hydrovane for self steering but also for extra security in case something happens to my rudder, but now watching this video I’m not sure anymore if having just the Hydrovane s enough or do I need a drogue too? What if I only have a drogue, will I be able to steer?
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 2 күн бұрын
If I had had a hydrovane I wouldn’t have needed the drogue at all, I didn’t I had a vintage sailomat aux rudder windvane, it’s rudder was not powerful enough to handle the weather helm alone (I had to lash the tiller over before the rudder broke to off set the pressure) so the drogue took the pressure off but the sailomat still keep us on course

That's really scary. Many years ago, my friend Chris and myself went night fishing on Dungeness beach in Kent, UK. There was a gale force wind building. That beach is a steep shingle bank where the waves break close to the shore and generate a massive undertow. I cast my line, parked my rod about 20 yards from the shore and started to retreat safe distance back up the bank. The next thing I recall was bing hit by a freak wave and being in the water, The undertow dragged me along the shingle for some distance before I popped up about 40 yards offshore. I really had no idea where I was, which way the beach was, or indeed, which way was up. The wind was pushing me back towards the shore and I caught sight of Chris's Tilley lamp which he was waving in an attempt to see me. As I got close to the beach a breaker caught me and threw me onto the shingle, only to drag me back in and under again. I was like being in an ice-cold washing machine. Yet again, after surfacing offshore I was swept back and rolled over. On the third cycle, a wave threw me far enough onto the beach for Chris to grab my arm and drag me to safety. I was practically naked having lost my jeans, underwear and jacket. Once I was safely ashore, Chris gave me his coat and ran for help in the seaside pub which was a short distance up the beach. Although it was about 3am. the landlord helped retrieve me, called an ambulance and set me up with dry clothes and a blanket. That night, skill or experience didn't save me. The sea just decided it didn't want me.
