Can’t wait to go electric

Mind you, at the same time Tassie mechanics, similar to Dave, would have gone above and beyond to get you going again. It is very refreshing to see an economically honest video like this. There is obviously some added benefits from being a you tube channel and some knock on effects of that that others wouldn't necessarily recieve but otherwise great cost analysis.

Ok, that's a relief! Im on a Whatsapp cruising group, and someone has just had their motor pulled, also after only 144 hrs since a "rebuild". I'm gonna post the link to this vid there. At least you could put the dinghy on the hip and move. Magnus and Wendy on Nutshell did over 1000nm like that after they had engine failure. Yeah, electrics... It CAN be done and has, with pretty good success by Sailing Uma, as I guess youve heard ad nauseum, but above the Arctic Circle they had to charge with a little generator. You gotta be that kinda tech nerd tho, I reckon. I watched them progress from a Hyster motor and sprockets for flanges, into the nice OceanVolt unit they run now. I guess electric forces you into being a sailor, huh?! Fair winds, and make a plan with that pipe, before you hurt that engine!

Thank you SO much for exposing those scamming thieving liars. They could really get people killed. Ocean going vessels are not like suburban cars or lawn mowers, not that thieving liars are ok in anything. Imagine that prick working with aircraft.

James Sounds like that engine is good to go, and should last for years and years. Rebuilding an engine versus a new replacement s always ‘an issue’ Both dollar wise and the mental anguish. I have a 35 year old Yanmar 3HM 35 F that starts perfectly But every part on the outside of the block, exhaust elbow, motor mounts, seawater pump, Coolant pump , and alternator Have all given me problems. It’s a difficult choice. And I agree an electric motor in a cruising boat is not yet practical. Keep on keeping on.

Glad you are going again. I loke electric but agree with you 100% its no good for sailboats. Mainly because sailboats use so little fuel. I used less than 50 litres Brisbane to tas.

Hey James, its the first Ive heard of this,, I don't live for the web, or Instagram etc.. Unfortunately, like you I too had a shitty experience in NZ 😢. Im a reasonably competent engineer and was going to make a few suggestions, but you seem to have covered them all. One suggestion,, close the sea water intake when engine is off. I had an anti-siphon valve stick , flooded the engine and exhaust system, took a week to fix. Root cause, my Lady friend stood over it while brushing her hair & a few got in the valve 😮 Fair winds and "Non illigetimi carborundum " 😊

I'm 61 I've had several yachts My current is a 43' centre cockpit ketch. Not if, but when the motor needs serious stuff done to it, it's in a huge DEEP hole. Even if I had a 17 year old back, it'd be hell. I saw a cat with outboards and I know they're a thief magnet, but protection etc can be made/added. The ability to stand the SOB up and have all that access etc and 4 stroke is cool. This engine option has dictated my next vessel, cause as we all know, with boats and maintenance, IT AIN'T IF, IT'S WHEN!!! and the stress/issues/NIGHTMARE realities of and engine failure, and on a mid sized cat with two, Ya' gotta' spare.

He'll of a story with a great outcome. You now have way more in depth experience-based knowledge of your own engine. With that comes recognition of what that thing wants in advance to stay happy and we'll fed b4 the hunger and slow hard working demise sets in on its way to total unexpected collapse. Buying a new engine is great for as long as the maintenance is ahead of failure which needs to start from day one. . Preemptive maintenance with an older engine is allways cheaper and more satisfying than buying whole new ones. The hands on willingness by the owner to intimately know his own engine comes with the bonus of creating a healing effect on that noisy smelly fabulous metalic lovable little freind and the sweet music it makes going uphill thru the pass. Its similar to the loving way you feel about Alberg 30s and Triatia in particular. Lots of love to you both beautiful souls. Mark from NZ.... spiritual classic auto marine mechanic and Kelly Peterson 46 owner in Whangarei hungry to start the off shore life at age 74. (I saw Triatea in the town basin without knowing u had gone to Greenland... would have loved to had met you)

Im a local Nz yachty in Opua. JB Marine is very dodgy and known for F#cking people over and have personal experience. Dont go near Opua for work on anything they are crooks the other mechanics “Seapower”are just as bad Best to go Whangarei if anything needs to be done. When you went to them for rebuild I had a bet how long until it failed. Sorry you had to learn the hard way like many others.

I had a similar issue once that was hard to diagnose on my boat motor. Like you I found that while it was traumatic its amazing how many side issues got sorted at the same time, for me it was completely renovated fuel system from hose clips to injectors, renovated cooling system including heat exchanger and both pumps etc etc. Then in my case discovered it was all down to a simple cheap fix (exhaust elbow was blocked). Some clouds do have silver linings, motor was never better after the trauma settled.

I sail my Columbia 26 foot sailboat that I bought for $6000. dollars, from San Diego to Hawaii then a year later 4000 miles to Guam, singlehanded (solo) Total of over 7000 miles using a plastic Sexton for navigation in the late 1970's. Long before GPS, I still have the Sexton mounted on my office wall.
