This is really cool! I'm kind of curious what that guy in the red cape is using. Does it still qualify as a buckler, is there another designation, or maybe he's holding a long stick behind it?
@katiegilroy98632 ай бұрын
@@NieR042 hi there! I am the one in the cape and am actually a woman. There are a variety of ways to name the weapon in my left hand, most folks in the SCA just call it a madu. I consider mine more of just a short spear with hand protection on it - like the basket hits on the swords. There is also evidence of holding a spear with a buckler in the Gladiatoria group of fighting manuals from the 1430's where an individual would hold their buckler and spear in one hand and their sword in the other. This weapon can be used in the SCA for stabbing on either end, but typically is not used for slashing attacks.

I don't know much about medieval sword fighting, and it's the first time I've ever seen that shield/staff defense strategy before. Did people really use that in historical times?
@katiegilroy98634 ай бұрын
@@mammontustado9680 it is based on the madu - a weapon out of India made of a buckler with two long deer horns poking out from either side. You could also consider it a spear with a butt spike which would've also been common historically.

@@sirtenders2965 HEMA focuses strictly on dueling according to manuals from a very specific time period. SCA is more broad, encompassing any culture and time period before 1600. We don't strictly subscribe to having to use a certain masters book, and the SCA also has much more than combat, with participants able to focus on different arts, archery, or even equestrian without ever touching combat.

Hi, i am not sure why this video got recommend to me, but now i am curious about the style the fighter in red is using since i never see something fighting like that. Is the long weapon they're holding supposed to be a staff or maybe some kind of polearm? Anyway i would love to know the context becase this looks very fun!
@katiegilroy98636 ай бұрын
Hi there! The fighting is part of an organization called the SCA - a medieval reenactment/larp group focusing on recreating pre 17th century activities! They do have much more than fighting if you are more of an art person, or if you prefer a different style of fighting such as fencing or shooting archery. You can learn more here: www.sca.org/ My group is located in Dallas, TX but there are groups all over the world! I am the fighter with the staff. in the SCA, it is often called a madu, which is a weapon that originated in India. It is a shield with 2 sharp horns sticking out of either end, so both the bottom and top can be used for stabbing. In the SCA, we use weapons made of rattan, so they often require a bit of imagination to percieve them as the actual historical version. I personally consider my stick to just be a shorter spear with a butt spike on the end because I think that fits better with the style of armor I wear, and spears with spikes on the end were extremely prevalent across most of medieval history. The large basket hilt is just an SCA-ism, most folks use them in lieu of gauntlets because they are safer for their hands. I like my hands intact, so I use a basket hilt on both my sword and spear. It is very probably not a true medieval fighting style, or at least not one that would have been prevalent in many or any cultures, but it is the style I prefer! The SCA leaves a lot of room for folks to discover what works best for them and find a way to incorporate it into SCA combat.
