Western culture and I include Russia, have such a close embrace with music it goes straight to our Souls through our hearts. Some other cultures have similar music too, India, Asia, Japan, China, some African peoples and perhaps some so called First peoples. My point is that those cultures that have prevented expression via music and song, musical instruments are truly dead cultures, lifeless hollow people without Souls, I know many of these people they have escaped to us to fill their inner void, they feel alive in music and cannot understand why one man should stop what is so obvious;y a gift, a gift from God.

Sadece giden midir giden yoksa arda kalacak hicbir sey birakmayan gidenin arkasindan hasret cekmeyen miydi?

Triste 😢

Zofia Kilanowicz best interprets Górecki's music. Unfortunately, she became seriously ill with multiple sclerosis. The words are a prayer carved with a broken tooth on the wall by a young Polish woman tortured by the Germans. She survived the war.

Performed in a beautiful St. Mary's Church in Krakow, conducted by an American conductor who used to be a director of Krakow Philharmonic and was a friend of Pope John Paul II. This composition is based on a poem written by a young girl on the wall of Nazi prison in Zakopane to her mother before she was murdered there.

This first time I heard Gorecki's Symphony 3, 2nd Movement, I was living in the South fo France and it was fall time. It was gray outside., raining and the air was cold. I remember having incense burning, perhaps a fire in the fireplace. It left such an impression on me. Several years later, I was listening to it on my walkman living in Kyoto, Japan walking in the snow. Triple wow! That movement just grabs me.

Gilbert Levine (born 1948) is an American conductor who attended the Julliard School of Music, and holds an A.B. degree from Princeton University and a M.A. degree from Yale University. He was an assistant to Sir Georg Solti in London at the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), and in Paris with Orchestre de Paris. Early in his career, Levine conducted orchestras both in Europe and the United States, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the NDR Sinfonie-Orchester Hamburg, and the Radio-Sinfonie Orchester-Berlin. Levine first gained international notice when he became conductor and artistic director of the Kraków Philharmonic in 1987. He was the first American chief conductor of an Eastern European orchestra. He was a friend of Pope John Paul II and conducted papal concerts on Pope's request, one of them in a beautiful St. Mary's church in Krakow with almost 600 year old altar, the size of the entire wall with gold biblical figures. I have attended a couple of his concerts when I was in Krakow in the 90s, very memorable.
