Amazing sound and visuals..love the ducks! The shiitakes from my logs are much less cracky in the caps, not sure why, but I kinda think yours are better.😀Do you ever force them in an ice bath? I have never tried this and just leave mine be...a few in spring and many in the fall.
@SporeTownNews28 күн бұрын
Thanks :) There is so much rain the past few seasons they all fruit naturally. This early spring fruiting was a cool weather shiitake strain. I will check the log tags for which strains specifically and update w the info later. The conditions were just right for the cracky cap flower top designs this season. I don't have high tech equipment to make videos, mostly my cell, and a Gopro 10 on this harvest day, so I am glad if audio and video came together alright. Yes, hopefully more in the fall. Thanks :)

@@SporeTownNews Very cool! Your production value is great! This video was freaky but on point. I've been foraging in upstate NY for 20+ years. I've only found morels a handful of times. But my chantrelles are a guarantee. Has anyone ever checked apple orchards for morels? I'm new to putting out my own videos on KZbin, and I loved the creators originality. I've got a couple of informational videos up and one rap song about foraging.
@SporeTownNews2 ай бұрын
Thank you. I am tempted to morel hunt apple orchards because they can be plentiful, but then I avoid foraging areas that are contaminated. Morel mushrooms growing in old apple orchards that have been treated with lead arsenate may accumulate levels of toxic lead and arsenic that are unsafe for humans to consume. Good luck!

Amber jelly roll fungus (Exidia crenata in the US) is a distinctly different species from Brown Witches' Butter (Phaeotremella frondosa formerly called Tremella foliacea) and Yellow Witches' Butter (Tremella mesenterica) and Black Witches' Butter (Exidia nigricans). I've been wanting to make a jelly fungus video but can't seem to find enough specimens of the different kinds all at once to pull it off properly. And, yes, the ever changing latin binomials are a serious pain to deal with as a mushroom content creator. I've been corrected on several occasions for using out of date names.
@SporeTownNews2 ай бұрын
Thanks :) I love to talk about mushrooms. Right, classification can be a debate among taxonomists, as this fungus was formerly classified as a Tremella, then it was synonymous with Exidia recisa, and may be classified again after it runs thru this North American crenata phase. Right, but people call this mushroom a witch's butter nonetheless as it is a potential street name for a variety of Exidias and is not a scientific name. Scientific name changes happen so frequently in mycology nowadays it is a little frustrating, if not enlightening, was part of my point in this video. This is why I leave the title at Exidia alone :) ... for now lol. Fortunately none of the species we speak of are known to be toxic yet, so it doesn't matter in that regard.
@MushroomJourneys-et9gk2 ай бұрын
@@SporeTownNews Ok, gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've just never heard amber jelly roll referred to in that way, but it doesn't surprise me that it is on occasion. Good mushroom discussion! Keep up the great work!

@@SporeTownNews Yes, so funny. I guess all the interesting and amazing common names make up for navigating the tedium of the taxonomical morass and for sure I try to emphasize the point that collectively we don't know much about mushrooms, hardly anything.

@SporeTownNews2 ай бұрын
Great experiment. I guess you are putting your morel spores in the substrate? If you save some morel butts you can plant them around the young root system too. Even better if the morels already associate with apple trees. Include some ash from a wood stove or recent fire.
