Even if we agree or disagree with you, we can deny the monumental work that you did here, I enjoyed it so much, great great work. Hopefully you keep posting this kind of videos, reviewing more lists. In this particular case, I'm so upset that latinamerican films are nowhere, as it nothing happens over here, but still it's fun to see what critics include

Jewish programming and Jewish executives patting themselves on the back and giving each other "rewards" to legitimize their cash grab industry. They commodified art and it lead up to the point of protests, strikes, and AI

10 American Fiction I found this a real bore and didn't fiind anything I could like, nothing felt cinematic. 9 Oppenheimer it was fine but too wordy and scientific and those trial scenes frustrated me,Murphy and Downey Jr great 8 Barbie Didn't like it's message at all,Gosling fairly fun but the hype for this floored me,love the production design 7 Poor Things The more it went on the more I disliked Emma's character, outstanding visuals and costumes 6 Killers of the Flower Moon DiCaprio badly micast,De Niro villian 101,solid but not one of Scorsese's best 5 Past Lives seen it twice, touching,Magaro MVP,very on the nose though. 4 The Holdovers A great watch, great story, great characters,Payne always delivers. 3 Maestro this got a hard time but I thought it was top quality film making,Cooper and Mulligan outstanding, stunning visuals. 2 The Zone of Interest uncomfortable but I was hooked from start to end,Glazer needs to work more. 1 Anatomy of a Fall opening scene best of this year,i'm a sucker for mystery thrillers,Huller should have won the Oscar.

Just watched this video and a year alter these are my rankings 10 Avatar Way of Water I like James Cameron but I just wish he'd escape this world and make something like True Lies again 9 The Fabelmans Michelle Williams performance spoiled this for me,bit of an ego stroke. 8 All Quiet On the Western Front it was ok but it's just another war film 7 Women Talking and there was too much of it,Ben Whishaw was very good though. 6 Triangle of Sadness enjoyed the opening hated the middle and the end frustrated me 5 Elvis enjoyed it but not for 1 moment did I believe any of it,Hanks worst peformance ever 4 Top Gun Maverick very entertaining nostalgia piece top tier blockbuster and the acting is better than it needed to be. 3 Banshees of Inisherin funny moving with top quality acting esp from Barry K. 2 Everything Everywhere very inventive,i'm not a social media person so maybe that's why,JLC/Yeoh deserved their Oscars 1 Tar towering cinema, slow burn, makes you think and want to watch it all over again,Blanchett peerless

I love your comments on the costumes for Ordinary People. So much story telling through such ordinary clothing. I especially like how Moore almost always has a slung jacket on her shoulders, almost like a shell protecting her. Also how she's almost always holding something between her and the other characters. There's a nuance in that movie that is amazing.

I certainly liked Around The World In 80 Days. It's not my favorite by any means but more than enjoyable enough to rewatch PLUS it had a great score. IMHO the worst pic for best picture was The Greatest Show On Earth. Talk about dated. Adults acting like toddlers are embarrassing.

others are saying it, but the dismissal of the conversation about HUAC/McCarthyism is absurd-- you cannot talk about art without politics being involved, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the oscars of all things. to talk about hollywood in the '50s and dismiss focus on mccarthyism and even outright show disdain for those who do is a huge misstep

YT again, didn't notify me you had a new video out. I started watching you after your Sight & Sound video. I don't always agree with you, but I definitely respect your opinion, and this series is informative and really motivates me to fix my blindspots. Love the series. Your comments about camp, and our shared apathy towards fervent stalinist communists being rejected by Hollywood, really cements you as one of my favorites lol.

Suuuuch a great series of videos you have here, found them in the weekend and have been nonstop watching them, love that the stories behind the awards can be preserved. Take this less as a recomendation and more like a request for esperimentation: don't tell us who wins the category right at the start, reveal it dramatically when you think it has a punch. You have the writing, editing and narration ability to make La La Land's loss shocking again. Now if you excuse me, I'm gonna make my letterboxd watchlist double in size.

You make such an intriguing and convincing case for Around the World, and for 56 in general as an important year. There are many fun side notes and comments one could engage with too…. But I watched this days ago and I still can’t quite understand your hot take on McCarthyism in general. Are you saying HUAC and McCarthy just like weren’t a big deal? Because people went to literal prison, people like Trumbo WERE standing up for very important ideals. People like Kazan are, I think, rightly remembered as cowards and turncoats or worse. I just don’t see how you make such an unexpected and compelling point as you did about the bad seed and not dismissing it as camp, but also just toss off a line like that about a hugely pivotal moment in American history. One that I might add has direct resonance today.

My favorite trivia about this oscars is the movie The Bowery Boy's movie High Society nomtnied for best story is the only movie to be nominated mistake, as they thought it was the musical high society. Witch is funnier when you know that The Bowery Boys movies were cosndierd the lowest of low brow trash cinema at the time

I enjoyed your video essay, and appreciate the amount of work you put into it. However I disagree strongly with a number of your assessments of the films . I've seen Around the World in 80 Days several times and agree with the usual consensus that it's it's not deserving of best film by any stretch. I also think that the Ten Commandments is deeply flawed despite being a very impressive production, some of the actors are truly Hammy, and the special effects do look very phony, even for the period when the film was made. You are ignorant about the blacklist. Most of the people who are blacklisted were not communists, they were liberals and progressives. Most of the blacklisted people were completely undeserving of being unable to work or in the case of writers having to work for far less than their usual money amounts under assumed names. There was more than a little anti-Semitism going on with the Congressional hearings and who was blacklisted.

Absolutely agree. I'm neutral on the feelings around the movies, but the blacklisting of artists during that time was absolutely disgusting.

Really love your videos, they are always so well made and researched and a great breakdown of each oscars, always excited when a new one comes out. I do have to be completely honest I was quite disappointed with your strange out of left field take on the McCarthy blacklisting in Hollywood, and in a sense seemed justify it? which considering the large consensus it was an awful time for the film industry. I thought that was blazingly bizare to hear you say "I dont care about fervent stalinist communists", honestly this was the last channel I would expect to use reactionary conservative talking points, an incredibly disingenuous thing to say considering its completely antithetical to what America is "supposed" to stand for. I'm sure you're very happy fervent stalinist communists like Chaplin were blacklisted and force to flee America, what an incredibly disappointing take to have in this otherwise great video.

oh, hi! I'm new to your channel but I'm already really loving the way you contextualize all of this. It's exactly what I needed. But I also really love your honest assessment of "modern interpretations" of these movies. (ex: Around the World in 80s days and colonialism, Eileen Heckart being camp in The Bad Seed). you honestly state the prevailing "opinion" but don't give it more air than it deserves or acquiesce to it. I thoroughly appreciate that.

Reportedly, Darryl F. Zanuck wanted Maureen O'Hara for Anna who was much closer to the character and type for Mrs. Leonowens (and who also could sing it). I always felt that Ms. Kerr was too British; too delicate and lady like for the part of such a woman. But Yul Brynner had recently met Ms. Kerr and wanted to work with her; and that was that.
