"I am someone that has never really struggled to separate books from movies or tv..." then minutes later, continue to criticize the film based on its differences from the book. Not to hate but i just wanna point out that, while I understand your points, I’m confused. You initially acknowledged the limitations of the medium and that you understood that things are gonna be different when it's adapted to a movie, but still continue to compare the tiny details of the movie to the book? For example: The Lake Scene. While I understand your point, shooting it during the day rather than at night would have been more effective for cinematography. The metaphor of Henry underwater is significant as it reflects his overwhelming emotions, and such creative decisions require changes in the setting. These nuances are clearly made due to difference movie format and book format. Given your claim of never struggling to separate the two mediums, I expected you would understand these changes and decisions. It's better to criticize the movie on its own merit as a stand alone medium with your disclaimers.... or better just don't make any disclaimers at all Personally, I think the movie got the essence of the book and that's all that matters. It doesn't matter if it's carbon copy or not. It's called adaptation anyways. And it's best to look at it as a separate entity. The medium shapes the message. When the medium changes, the storytelling must adapt to fit its new format. Nevertheless, I agree to many of your points and criticisms (especially the emails) and i think they are valid. FYI: Matthew got Casey's blessing on every major changes he made on this film, including June :) I recommend this interview for supplementary content: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpjCYXalipmWpLc

@@theManics0613 I think the majority of the points I made were about the movie on its own - the pacing and the lack of development for many storylines - but alright 🤷

Most ROYAL wedding cakes are all white or mostly white with say gold touches. (You can see past examples of say Di and Charles' cake or other notable ones.) But the entire first scene sort of sets the mood to not to take the movie too seriously. For one thing, there is NO OTHER food visible, so there is a lot of alcohol on an empty stomach. (Alex seems to have found a cookie or canape which he puts on the ledge behind the couch, but that is all. And his concern over what fork to use become irrelevant with no other food in sight.) Also, such a cake is totally impractical. Not only is it too tall but it is set up on a raised platform, rather than a depressed area. I'm not sure how it could be served without bringing out a stepladder. The switch to the Blue Danube Waltz as we get to the tottering cake is - I think brilliant - particularly if you have ever seen the movie 2001 (where the orbiting space craft are sort of dancing around each other). ----- No, the waiter would not have been allowed to bring in a cell phone with a camera and would have already signed an NDA so would have gotten into SERIOUS trouble if his pictures had shown up in the press. But without that, no newspaper photos, so the story would have died there. (As it is, pumping up the importance of the event to threatening the US election is a stretch.) Comedy often has to veer - just enough - into the absurd to work.

Matthew Lopez grappled with questions like including June. Within the limitations of a two-hour movie, he made the deliberate decision to focus on the Alex-Henry love story to the conclusion of all else. Making a longer movie, in particular a series, was totally out of the question. In an earlier period where male-male love stories were iffy at best, Lopez could have pushed that aspect in the rear to include all the other ins and outs of the book storyline. As it was, the secondary characters that are included get shoved to the edges to focus on the romance. When I hear people critical of what gets left out, I always think what would they want taken out in order to add other elements. Two hours will never be longer than the 120 minutes in it, so something has to give. And in order to include June AND the reason she is important would tie up an awful lot of screen time taken away from the core storyline. I do like that Lopez worked so closely with the author Casey McQuiston. Perhaps it was McQuiston who suggested it was necessary to cut June out. It would also be interesting to do another movie explaining that June was away at school during the year of the original story line and focus just on her, with Alex and Henry characters in the background ("Red, White & Royal June"?) Personally I'd love to see something done along those lines for both Amy and Zahra. Also, with the book out first, I wonder how many fans who see the movie first, perhaps not even knowing there was a book, finally read the book and think the same about the importance of the secondary characters in the novel. Certainly if that is how the sequence had worked in real life, movie first, follow-up book, fans would be gushing about how wonderful the book was for adding these story lines instead of lamenting the elimination of them in the novel.
@johnnehrich96014 ай бұрын
Having never heard of the book before, I started watching the reaction videos on KZbin, then got the book and read it once. Finally I saw the full movie. I've gone back and read a few sections of the book that correspond to what I consider the powerful scenes in the movie but I literally have rewatched the movie countless times, and every reaction (often a couple of times) and the blooper reels, interviews, etc. I can find. I've also pondered a lot concerning different people's reactions to how much they like the movie vs. the book. Because of this question (and never taken a course in the art of the film), I watched all four adaptations of Pride & Prejudice - the 1940 black and white one, the 1980's and '90's 6-part series, and the 2005 movie. And listened to what fans have said, fans of the book, fans of each version. I don't have an answer other than another of my most favorite movies is the 1939 MGM Wizard of Oz. However, I grew up in the 1950's, before one could get copies of movies on video, DVD, and the internet, when any re-release of a movie was very rare. I think my parents took me, as a 5 yo, to see the FIRST re-release of the movie in 1955, 16 years after the original release. And from the late '50's and on, the annual big production of showing it once a year on tv, on the low-resolution (and for my family) black and white tv. On the other hand, the very first book I ever read was the third Oz book, Ozma of Oz, which had the numerous original Edwarding Art Nouveau illustrations. In the books, Oz is real place, and a bit more scary than the movie (although reading about scenes rather than seeing them tones down the effect). So for me, there is the wonderful movie AND the wonderful series. The points where they coincide are not as often as one might think. (I also love Disney's Return to Oz, based on Land of Oz and Oz, which many Oz fans consider a sort of love-letter to L. Frank Baum's creations.) Not a big fan of ALL the numerous revisions, The Wiz, Disney's Oz, The Great & Powerful, and so on. Back to the RW&RB story, perhaps this will generate a musical and/or Broadway version in the future. Further down the road, a second film version. An so on, all in the RW&RB "universe." Meanwhile, I will rewatch the movie again and tear up through the entire thing, at all the happy points.
