Ive always defined woke as diversity at the detriment of quality. My coworker told me the other day he thought GTA 6 was woke because it had a female playable character. Like no, just because it has a female character does not make it woke. Maybe if it was a female character that never struggles because shes a "strong woman" but no. Unless shes a poorly written character, then no the game isnt woke. Something like battlefield 5 would be woke from the forced inclusion of women into a historical event they would have never been in, and there lack or struggle in that position because of their femininity. The storytelling is what makes it woke or not, not the diversity itself. If you want the inclusion of multiple viewpoints in your story, make sure those characters have different viewpoints

This dlc could have been a free update. I didn't really like the story of the og starfield but sorta did like the lore and world building but it lost me with that ass ending.

I personally don't think that it is ruining gaming but I have seen it ruin movies and because of that I can understand why some gamers might be afraid that this virus could spread to their media too. Movies went from being art to being propaganda and I would hate to see that happen to games. At the end of the day people shouldn't care what gender a character is and unless it has something to explicitly to do with the plot sexuality should just be left out of the game, gay or strait, which is why I wouldn't say The Last of Us is woke, I mean the entire second game is about these 2 female characters who are in a relationship so its kinda something that can be touched on because it has to deal with the character dynamics, but you mentioned Overwatch and its like "why the fuck do we need to know if they suck dick or not?" and I can honestly see why some people could see that as pushing an agenda, it doesn't add anything to the game it just feels like identity politics. So while I agree with most of what you said in the video I do think you may want to look at their point of view with more empathy and help guide them into seeing what you think rather than just deeming them "far right extremists" or "homophobes" or "racists" or "fear mongers", all this will do will further a divide in the gaming community, and we shouldn't let politics ruin this community.

I'm sorry man but we gotta clear one thing. These productions are openly woke. But to different extents. What should be argued, is the impact, the positives, the negatives. Woke: "The push for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, often based on the belief that unequal outcomes are the result of discrimination" It does not mean 'gayness' or 'women' it's about the purposeful uplifting of groups, on a basis of group identity, rather than individual identity. That is why you are seeing these games labelled woke, and thinking: 'what on earth makes this woke? you must be out of your mind' but I think that's just a misunderstanding of the critisism. It's more of a meritocricy debate mixed with a generational guilt debate. edit: Listen to any of the staff in charge of these projects speak about the production, and you can hear that this was a big factor in their hiring practices and outlook during production. Yes, Griffin Gaming and Andypants throw around the word too much. Without explaining it, which is why pretty much all of the left unfortunately don't know what it means. And because it's a whole belief set, it's hard to infer the meaning from just someone using it in context. Hence, I provide it for you. Hope it helps.

Not to mention you also trying the age old, and incorrect accusation that simply because past female characters existed, then modern ones are the same thing, despite characters like Ellen Ripley, or (as you mentioned) Joanna Dark being loved because they were good characters first, and female characters first.

I understand the exhaustion with politics. Ive never watched griffin gaming, so i cant speak to him. However, it seems like youre fundamentally misunderstanding the issue people have with "wokeness" in video games. Of course people dont dislike lara croft or samus. I also havent seen a problem with representation like kimberly in SF6 (although i admitedly am not big into street fighter). That's because these characters have style, theyre well written, like you said. Even something like life is strange, people didnt have a problem with that. Its literally a story about lesbians, but thats core to its identity. Lastly, Disco Elysium, an inherently political and rather left wing game, does so artistically. All of these examples, i want to juxtapose with (i wont even use the easy examples of concord of dustborn) something like the wolfenstein young blood. Calling any wolfenstein games far right would be odd, as youre literally slaughtering nazis, however they implemented these really just, grating, modern sounding quirky protagonists. They werent well written, why didnt we play BJ or some other grizzled veteran? We couldve played some hardened ellen ripley esque character if you really wanted to have diversity for the sake of diversity, but instead we get badly written "token" characters. Thats whats the issue is. When you prioritize diversity, it is one more thing that the writing team has to focus on, one more theme that you need to weave into the narrative of your story, and like any addition to a game, it will come at the expense of manpower or other resources. It is by this mechanism that diversity alone often results in at least slightly subpar writing of these tokens. If players cared about this theme, it would be resources well spent, but like you added near the end, people dont give a shit. Another example is AC Shadows. This is a good example because i remember the dev team explicitly stating in an interview that diversity consultants recommend they prioritize the added diversity/representation over their historical accuracy. What the hell? A historical setting that felt believable was one of the main reasons those old assassins creed games were so cool? As you can see, the prioritization of diversity over quality in games is no conspiracy. Of course it hasnt "dominated the market", but its a real, worrying trend. Not to mention, that would be if we're only talking about how diversity affects game quality. I trust i dont have to bring up gamer gate. Much of what Quinn, Grayson, and Sarkesian were accused of was true (I do encourage you to look at the timeline and receipts yourself). If you dont want to see politics, left or right in games, why do you turn a blind eye to politically based corruption in game review journalism? This brings me to my last point. Your "its both sides" argument. I understand this point, although i would say im more charitable, as i think politics can certainly be included in games, but i digress. The right, in this setting, is inherently reactionary. It doesnt want its politics in games, it doesn't have an end or a goal of itself, it exists solely to oppose a progressive establishment. This is the benchmark of reactionary conservatism (despite the negative connotations of that term). This is why i give the right much more grace in this issue than the left. Anyways, i could say a lot more about this, maybe even make my own video essay, but im not a fucking loser (lol). I do encourage you to not label things as far right or far left and instead engage with the ideas on their own. Modern American media studios hire people who make games/movies/TV shows that actively despise and trash their target demographics. On top of that DEI and liberal hiring practices breed incompetence and nepotism, which in turn lead to a decrease in the quality of the product. Did Star Wars fans hate "The Acolyte" because they were "racist" and "homophobic" or was it because the show was a subpar product?
