Very good answers to these questions Bryan! Thank you! I look forward to hearing more! My youngest son is dating a girl we would love for him to marry and they really want to marry. Out of our 7 kids, this is the only non-Catholic that has entered the picture. So all his older siblings and his parents got married in the Church and raised or are raising their kids in the Faith. Of course he wants her to become Catholic but she wants him to join her church so they have been "studying" a lot while keeping an honorable relationship. Meanwhile a year and a half has passed. They are 30 and 28. She is determined that they be on the same page faith wise or she will move on since she grew up with parents arguing about their differences. My son knows this is important too.(my husband died 3 years ago so we do not have his direct input...of course, everyone is praying mightily!) She is a "Sola Scriptura" Protestant, although they do not call themselves Protestants and don't like the other sects, like they are the ones who finally got it right in the 1800s, according to history. (but claiming they were around the whole time after the Apostles died). When a priest mentioned to me about her agreeing to raise kids Catholic even if she is not, she told me "That will never happen". She wants to be totally convinced that Catholicism is the True Faith but still feels hers is. John:6 and the question of Authority are keeping her looking into it. And she completely sees the problem of everyone coming up with their own interpretations of the Bible!. She has studied a lot over the last 3 years and had given up until things moved forward with my son.. I told him he needs to get a Spiritual Director, but he could not think of anyone. All the priests around here seem too busy or have short and distracted attention spans. So I suggested phone calls but he has not done it. They have gotten very close in all their other hopes for marriage and parenting. They have so, so much in common and really love each other. Heartbreak is inevitable if they go their seperate ways. How important do you think it is to have a spiritual director and how do you find a good one? Can a deacon do this? They both know a Catholic Deacon (25 years) who used to be one of her church's preaches for 10 years. Would that work? My son knows that if he goes elsewhere, none of us would attend that "wedding". And I also know I would have to warn her that he will be back. Both he and I have observed what we describe as like a skeleton compared to a full body when it comes to the ways our 2 churches do things. Thank you for your kind consideration!

What do you think on the idea of both partners having plain gold rings as a sign of equality between them?
@catholictruthliving
@catholictruthliving 19 күн бұрын
I think wedding rings are in invention, so people can choose to do what they wish and agree on. I personally (my own opinion) don't love engagement rings. Why are they so gaudy when 50% of engagements fail? If anything, the wedding ring should be the nicer one, but I feel companies make so much money off of this. I think simple wedding rings are fine if that's what the couple wishes.

@Kakaragi
@Kakaragi 18 күн бұрын
@@catholictruthliving It's emblematic to how in Genesis 24:2-9 Abraham had his servant make an oath with servant's hand under Abraham's thigh. According to the NAB notes it says, "the symbolism of this act was apparently connected with the Hebrew concept of children issuing from their father’s “thigh” (the literal meaning of “direct descendants” in 46:26; Ex 1:5). Perhaps the man who took such an oath was thought to bring the curse of sterility on himself if he did not fulfill his sworn promise. Jacob made Joseph swear in the same way (Gn 47:29). In both these instances, the oath was taken to carry out the last request of a man upon his death." So as these are oaths of sterility if the people making them break what they have promised, the same should be applied to marriage proposals too. By kissing the thigh, the groom to be binds himself to his bride to be and makes himself beholden to her so that he will always be loyal to and never abandon, and that their kids will be their kids. Not holding up to that means sterility for the either of them.

Is it sinful to wear revealing clothes when it is too hot to wear anything else (like in South-East Asia for example)?
@catholictruthliving
@catholictruthliving 16 күн бұрын
In general, yes, it could be. Especially if you are wear a lot of men are that might look or lust. Unless you are at the beach, of course, (though we shouldn't be showing everything even there). If it's really hot out, you can wear tank tops, shorts, etc, but there's no need to have the chest hanging out or showing or shorts so high that your butt is practically hanging out. You get what we are saying. So, while we can dress for the weather, we always want to be appropriately modest as well. Hope that helps.

If you went over this and I missed it apologies but National Geographic did a study where they showed images to men and studied their brain activity. While looking at a woman in a bikini, the only part of the brain that lit up was the part that registered objects, specifically tools. Back in the 80s I used to read Glamour magazine. It's always been a sex-selling rag. The worst one however, is Cosmopolitan. It wasn't always so bad though. My mom used to read it in the early 60s when it contained short stories. Mom dropped her subscription after Helen Gurley Brown got her hands on it. Now it's a manual on how to play more and more sex games to catch a man. By putting our bodies on display, we may catch males, but they certainly aren't decent men.

This was a great conversation. I do have a concern when articulating the problems with IVF. I don't think the use of a empirical or scientific articulation is overwhelmingly useful. What I mean by that is x number of fetuses died to get one pregnancy. The reason for the problem is how long will that statistic be in your favor. And what happens if/when IVF becomes more effective than the normal method of conceiving. Other than that the other problems are perfectly sound. In my humble opinion.

I think there's more to it than simply living together. Maybe it's that people who are more likely to live together (atheists moreso) are less happy people and more likely to do those things because of a lack of moral guide, but Catholics (and Christians in general by extension) are happier people overall and cheat less, etc etc so when they don't cohabitate it just makes it seem like cohabitation is the culprit, but really it's adherence to the faith? About the cited divorce rates. Those 70 to 80% weren't living the Catholic faith as a whole, knowing that a sacrimental marriage can not be undone. Also, if you pray together 5 minutes a day, your chance of divorce drops by over 80%. There are couples who were cohabiting for years prior to their conversion to the Catholic church, you can't just be expected to kick your partner out of the house while converting. Vow to live like brother and sister and sleep in separate beds before confirmation and marriage, and you'll both be able to receive the Eucharist weekly before marriage.

@catholictruthliving I agree, and I wouldn't recommend cohabiting to anyone. I was living with my GF for a few years as a luke warm protestant out of the church for 20 years. Out of nowhere I was compelled to come back, and not only come back, but come into communion with the Holy Catholic church, the church I grew up saying would be the last church I would join. Towards the end of RCIA I had two choices to be able to be confirmed into the church at Easter vigil, kick my gf out of the house along with her stuff with nowhere to go, or make a promise to live in separate beds as brother and sister. I chose the ladder and made the commitment after mass across from the tabernacle. As for scandal in the church, we talked about it in RCIA, so I'm aware of how to navigate within it.

And now at 42 and chaste I have more peace in my life than ever before. That sexual appetite isn’t there anymore. I don’t feel lonely vs when I was cohabitating I felt lonely and depressed. If you live together, then what did you save for marriage? 😂 You don’t have to be Catholic to understand this! Also, abstaining from sex is a lot easier if you each have your own places. Sure, it’s expensive, but so are the temporal consequences of sin… I’m a Hindu to atheist to witch to Christian to eventually Catholic convert. Even before I went “all in” to my Christianity 7 years ago, I knew it made sense to abstain and not live together before marriage, because even in my rudimentary secular understanding of marriage I felt it should be different and special from all other relationships.
