Is a burnished surface different from a honed surface?
@cogsdillnuneaton Жыл бұрын
Hi, yes a burnished surface is created by 'smoothing' down the peaks into the valleys on the premachined part. No material is removed, just displaced. Honing, removes material. hope that helps.
@beachboardfan9544 Жыл бұрын
@@cogsdillnuneaton So would a burnished surface be considered more durable since its essentially forged into shape instead of cut like honing?
@cogsdillnuneaton Жыл бұрын
@@beachboardfan9544 that is correct, burnishing also work hardens by about 5% so is ideal for things like bearing journals etc.. You can find out more here on our website - cogsdill.co.uk/products/burnishing-tools/

Does burnishing require machining to a close tolerance then the burnishing tool takes it to final dimension? Or is there little effect on dimensions regarding burnishing? Does it actually move metal?
@cogsdillnuneaton2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua - Burnishing 'Flattens the peaks into the valleys' from the pre-machining so it doesn't remove metal, but it does displace it. Depending on the prefinish, the rougher the surface, the more it displaces. Typically we are talking 10 - 20 microns of displacement on an application like this.
@joshuateter24102 жыл бұрын
@@cogsdillnuneaton awesome thanks for answering my question. So really it's a reduction in overall surface area regarding the finish roughness. Does this also somewhat work harden the journal being finished?
@cogsdillnuneaton2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuateter2410 Certainly does - we estimate 5 - 10% so its great for bearing surfaces.
