I put a stepped pod on my boat. Goes great when going fast but at low planing speed the water comes up from the stern, strikes the pod and tracks up throwing water upwards. Have been running like this for years so no great problem but considering extending the hull line to eliminate the step.

Thank you for sharing your process on this repair, I have the same blistering on my hull. How long did you leave the boat out of the water to dry before pressure washing, and how long after pressure washing before applying the filler?
@MonaroMarine3 ай бұрын
The boat was out only a few weeks before pressure washing. It took a few weeks to get all the blisters but then we filled right away. The sanding made the gelcoat over the blisters thinner but also made it hard to see them. Pressure washing got some but not all of the blisters. It worked best when the wand was close to square to the surface. We couldn't get that underneath because of the length of the wand. Since these blisters were very small and shallow a few weeks is plenty of time to dry out. Larger and deeper ones could take all winter to dry out. If they are not ground out first. I have seen blisters disappear over a winter storage without any repair but of course they will reappear.

@@MonaroMarine Thanks for the reply! my boat dried for 10 months outside. I ended up just sanding down the blisters, applying 4 coats Interprotect and 4 coats of VC Performance. Im happy with the results, and really hoping the blisters don't reappear.

Do you guys use acual fiberglass resin for the repairs or are you using something like West Systems epoxy for the patches? Great vid!

We use polyester resin and if it's below the waterline we use vinylester resin.

If a newer boat runs itself right up onto rocks and damages the hull extensively and is fixed under insurance, is this a big red flag and compromises it's strength? Should I stay away from purchasing it? Thoughts?
@scott86895 ай бұрын
Not if done properly. Fiberglass in pretty much infinitely repairable
@MonaroMarine5 ай бұрын
If the repair is done properly then there are no concerns. Sometimes it can be stronger in the repaired area because the layup may end up being thicker from the overlap of old to new.

Given that electric outboards are less expensive and easier to refit than inboard motors AND allows the bay to be used for batteries I expect EV versions of this to become VERY popular.
@billyhahnel82255 ай бұрын
That's not true, at all. Just the BATTERY setup alone for a 50hp electric outboard equivalent is in excess of $20,000. Just batteries. No motor or controls. You also can't run electric outboards full throttle for more than an hour before they need to be recharged. Then, there's the weight. The battery setup I just described is 800 pounds. Plus you need space to put it, components and all. I'm not hating. These are just facts. There's a space for electric outboards in the small boat fishing world or maybe the leisure pontoon ride world. However, until the battery technology gets better, the grid can handle the increased usage, and it is all wayyyy cheaper, internal combustion powered boats will continue to reign supreme.

Why can't you just do from outside?
@MonaroMarine6 ай бұрын
Delaminated on inside as well so you need to grind on inside to remove delam. Makes for stronger repair when you have new glass sandwiching existing glass. We were able to maintain the shape of the hull by glassing inside first. Less fairing in the end.

What is polybond and when is it used?
@MonaroMarine6 ай бұрын
It's a resin based paste. It's white and gets mixed with a green paste catalyst. We use it to bond fibreglass to fibreglass or wood to fibreglass.

Painful to watch....But, I appreciate that you're not a public speaker and come across as knowledgeable and authentic. Maybe it's just me, but using the term "pasted" sounds like a school project, and undervalues the actual precision work you're doing. Why/how are the stringers joined/slanted? and are they reinforced somehow prior to the fiberglassing? handling
@MonaroMarine6 ай бұрын
I agree it was not well done and I'm not a good public speaker but this video has the most views so it seems I have entertained the viewers. Lots of harsh, nonconstructive comments but I have chosen to respond to you. I have been away from the you tube so I am behind on all the comments. I don't do drugs. I'm not brain damaged. I am quite smart and have an engineering degree. I have used the word "paste" as it is how we have commonly referred to it around the shop. The product is Polybond. The stringer are slanted to create more surface area with the joint. The hull extension is added later because we don't have a mold for the full length. This is why the stringers have to be joined. The main hull is laid up with the transom and stringers in place to maintain the shape and rigidity of the hull. The aft end of the stringers are temporary and are knocked out when the transom is cut out. The permanent ends of the stringers are installed when the hull extension is installed. Stringers are "pasted" to boat , then glass tabbed to hull then fully encapsulated in glass.

Some questions Sir: What is the prime reason for this....I read the outdrives consume WAY less gas, is that true? What motor was in that before and what is the price of such a 300hp outboard. And lastly, could this be done to some speedboat like a Formula SR-1 and would it still lean as crazy in the curve? Thanks for your time :)
@MonaroMarine6 ай бұрын
The boat had a Volvo 300 hp gas engine with duoprop. I have found that 4 stroke outboards and stern drives have similar fuel economy. A 300 hp Mercury outboard is about $34,000 Canadian. I'm sure you could do this to a Formula and it should lean similarly.

Id like to know how you calculate the lift, and why the bottom of your pod doesn't follow the hull?
@MonaroMarine6 ай бұрын
You can calculate moments (weight x distance) from a fixed point in the boat for all the items that will change. Subtract out the old motor, add in the new motor and pod and the buoyancy created from the pod. The outboard is much lighter than the inboard but the weight is so much further aft. You need clean water at the prop. Raising the pod up from the hull bottom gives you that. We built a boat with the motor mounted to the transom. We took a notch out of the hull to create the clean water affect. After testing we did find that the notch was too long (I think 14"). The hull would suddenly jump out of the hole at the certain speed. We filled half the notch in which corrected the problem. A lot of this is trial and error.

Everybody wants brackets but this makes more sense. Brackets don't add hull length in most cases. Hull length is important because it adds efficiency at lower displacement speeds by adding waterline length. Displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. By extending the waterline hull length, you extend the displacement speed. The effort to push the boat faster rises considerably. You can go faster before that resistance in encountered. This also provides displacement/flotation back where it's needed which is under the heavy engine. This in turn reduces the leverage of supported weight aft of the transom which tends to cause porpoising. A common defect even in new boats. This also reduces the strain a bracket creates on the transom as well which means heavier reinforcement can be avoided. This also reduces the height of the outboard once installed which reduces the center of gravity height problems that outboards have. How? A common bracket allows the water to cleave clear of the bottom much further forward of the outboard. The water then rises as it proceeds aft requiring the outboard to be mounted even higher for the cavitation plate to make contact properly. But this does not occur with this design which is the same as normal transom mounted outboards. The water flows clear of the bottom right in front of the propeller where it needs to be. In fact with brackets, its common to need electric engine height adjusters installed because of the different water exit heights that far aft of the transom at different speeds. Unnecessary with this arrangement. Additionally, this allows for a shorter shaft length for the outboard which reduces the center of gravity problem that all outboards have versus inboards which sit where they should be- at the bottom of the boat. This also provides a swim platform on either side of the engine as well.
