On 9 October 2024 some five dozen invited guests - the majority of whom were senior serving, or retired, Chaplains from all three branches of the Australian Defence Force - gathered in Brisbane’s historic Anzac Park for the Official Unveiling and Service of Dedication for The National Defence Chaplains' Memorial Grove. Royal Australian Air Force Chaplain, the Reverend Wayne Ross, read the names of 44 ADF Chaplains who made the Ultimate Sacrifice while serving with the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force in time of war or in peacekeeping operations, and are inscribed on the Roll of Honour. For the first time anywhere in the Commonwealth of Australia, a "living" Memorial permanently and prominently honours the gallantry, sacrifice and dedication to duty of military Chaplains to the spiritual and material wellbeing of ADF personnel, in the past, right now and into the future. Located on a slight ridge in the serene eastern quarter of the public park (entry off Wool Street), the Memorial Grove overlooks the World War I Nurses’ Memorial Grove, Canon Garland Overpass, Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha, and a section of the busy Western Freeway and adjoining Bikeway. Brisbane City Council acceded to a brief, citizens-lead petition campaign in early 2020, and subsequently directed the City's business units - including architects and arborists - to develop a blueprint for the envisaged monument. The project team liaised with the original petitioner, who in turn engaged with ADF Directors-General - Chaplaincy in Canberra and Brisbane. From 2021, Walter Taylor Ward representatives (firstly James Mackay and then Penny Wolff) guided the initiative through the City Hall budgetary and planning processes and a design, that took full advantage of an existing semi-circle of six hoop pines (Araucaria cunninghamii) that flanked the chosen site in Anzac Park, was settled upon. In 2022, to complete a "ring" effect, Council arborists successfully planted two mature pines. Two years on, Council landscaping staff juxtaposed - east and west - heavy blocks of Brisbane sandstone (tuf) to form two “seats" on the verges. Four garden beds of bottlebrush (Callistemons), native rosemary (Westringia) and grasses were arrayed around an embossed, concrete disk centrepiece inscribed with the words, "The National Defence Chaplains' Memorial Grove. Dedicated to Australian Defence Force Chaplains who have humbly served this nation in times of war and peace. LEST WE FORGET." Councillor Wolff joined with proponent, Peter Collins CGMM, and Chair of the Australian Defence Force Chaplains' Committee, PRINCHAP the Reverend Kerry A. Larwill CSC, to Officially Unveil the centrepiece of The National Defence Chaplains' Memorial Grove on 9 October 2024, after a solemn ceremony MC-ed by the Reverend Gary C. Pope, Senior Staff Chaplain to the Office of Director-General Chaplaincy - Army. The Reading chosen was John 10: 11-17 and "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "Be Thou my Vision" the hymns sung. The Prayer of Dedication was intoned by Director-General Chaplaincy - Royal Australian Navy, PRINCHAP the Reverend Andrew Lewis, and the Dedication Blessing given by Australian Army's CHAP the Reverend Thomas Zaranski. The adjacent interpretive sign proclaims: "This Memorial Grove honours Australian Defence Force Chaplains whose dedication and selfless commitment in serving Australia's service personnel and their families during times of peace and conflict is commemorated. Chaplains have served at sea and ashore with the Royal Australian Navy since 1912. During World War 1, 414 Army Chaplains served in the Australian Imperial Force and chaplains volunteered to join the Royal Australian Air Force from 1926. Since inception, the role of the Chaplain has been integral to the nation's defence capability and the wellbeing of its people. Chaplains continue to faithfully serve in the Australian Defence Force, domestically and on international operations, providing religious ministry, spiritual guidance and pastoral care to service personnel and their families. This Memorial Grove is dedicated to ADF Chaplains, in gratitude for their humble service." #OurADF #TheirNameLivethForEvermore #OurVeterans #TYFYS #DefenceChaplainsMemorial #AnzacDayPrecinct #GarlandMemorial

I just watched this movie and while I applaud Netflix for taking on this topic, this is a bad movie because it adds fantastical elements to the biblical story, it leaves out important parts of the biblical story and it flat out gets other parts of the biblical story wrong.

Here's my most fundamental observation. The churches do not tell us how to live a Christian life, don't tell us our purpose in life. Polls show that Christians don't know their purpose. Our purpose is to seek God, to allow Him to reveal Himself to us, to come to love Him and find our joy in Him. How to seek God? Try to obey His command to love our neighbor for where love is, God is there also.

I agree with you, I've had more issues working in the church than in the secular world.

In a way, it prevents us from living for our own pleasure. Which is why people reject the idea of God in their lives. It has nothing to do with evidence.

interesting point, can you elaborate,

@@walkinfaithcraigsyracusa4339 I've been around a long time. I think it bothered me a little that our Lord said that loving our neighbor was the second greatest command. Why not just be nice to everyone? I read a short story by Tolstoy titled "Where Love Is" and a light came on. The story deals with our purpose in life and how it fits perfectly into loving your neighbor. Martin Buber also speaks to this in his "I and Thou". Here is one of his quotes: “The true meaning of love one's neighbor is not that it is a command from God which we are to fulfill, but that through it and in it we meet God.” Some years ago a group of men including me met with our pastor to do some volunteer task and our pastor asked each of us why we volunteered. Most common answer was it made them feel good about themselves. I answered something like, "this is how we come to know God".. The world is longing for a reason to live/ a purpose worthy of our lives. I find it deeply disconcerting that Christians are seeking purpose almost as much as unbelievers. May God bless your ministry.

There is a lot of darkness in this world and nefarious activity played out in plain site! People have been given free will to choose to do good or evil at any given moment and many suffer, because they use it to abuse others! God loves all aspects of life and you the reader are loved. He cares for each one of us from the womb to the tomb, the body and spirit, but it’s the spirit that lives on for eternity. So please note that Jesus our Saviour, will be returning soon and we all will need to give an account of our lives: the thoughts, deeds, actions, words and motives done in the flesh, and who can stand before God? If you did not know, Jesus is our redeemer who came to save us from our fallen and sinful nature. If you don’t know Him yet and how He came to restore our relationship with God in heaven, who loves you and wants you to be reconciled to Him, I say to you today: Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, no one comes unto the Father but by Him, Jesus is the only one mediator between God and man, and only God can forgive sins. What is sin? It is knowing the right thing to do and not doing it. Sin includes things like sexual immorality, addictions, drunkenness, drugs, watching porn, lying, stealing, unforgiveness, hate, anger, gossiping, and much more. These separate us from God, who is holy and righteous and just. He weighs the motives of our hearts and all of us have missed the mark. The call to salvation is for everyone. Regardless of your wealth, status, sexual orientation or religious background, Jesus invites you to turn from sin and accept His gift of salvation. No amount of money, social standing, or religious observance can save you. It’s not about comparing yourself to others; the only comparison that matters is with God, and we all fall short, we all have sinned. God doesn’t want our religion; He wants a relationship with us. Good works cannot save you; there is nothing you can do to earn salvation. It’s by grace alone, so no one can boast. Our works are like filthy rags to a holy God. The Bible says the wages of sin is death, eternal separation from God in hell-a fate you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. We are created with a God-shaped vacuum that nothing else can fill but Him. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins on the Cross so we can be restored to God, our heavenly Father. There needed to be a sacrifice, and God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, who was sinless, to take our place. It’s like a mother giving away her new-born baby or you giving away your only child to pay someone else’s debt, someone who couldn’t care less about you or love you back. God was willing to do that for you and me. Jesus Christ was crucified, with nails driven through His hands and feet and a crown of thorns pressed onto His head. He was whipped until His skin was torn off, becoming unrecognizable. As He hung on that Cross, He did it for your sins. He took our sins upon Himself, including the very sins that have destroyed our lives. He was destroyed for those sins on that Cross. He bled and died for our sins, which were buried with Him in the grave. Three days later, Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. Jesus is alive! Now is the time to respond. Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This declaration and belief bring salvation. John 3:36 warns, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” Embrace this good news today and pray: “Dear God, thank you for loving me. I confess that I have sinned against you. I believe that Jesus, Your Son, died on the cross to pay for my sins. I believe that Jesus was raised from the dead. I ask that you forgive all my sins. I confess that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Thank you for Your gift of eternal life! I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.” Remember, it’s not the prayer that saves you; it’s the heartfelt belief and confession, repentance and choosing to trust in Jesus for a righteous life, from now on. Now is the time for salvation. Turn from darkness to light, from sin to salvation, and follow Jesus. Ask God for forgiveness of the wrong things you have done, repent (turn from them) and leave your old sinful ways behind, and begin a new and righteous life trusting in Christ Jesus, every single day, ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit to help you, and read your Bible and obey it, repent to God daily, connect to God through prayer and ask the Holy Spirit for revelation, guidance, wisdom and discernment.
