Hello! Nice job!!! What size are the half round routed cut outs please? Also the hole in the middle, do you use any special adaptor or connector to fit the tube from the vacuum unit cable? Thanks

@allaboutmarquetry Ай бұрын
Hey there, The half round router cutter 'Cut' outs have got to be as deep as the rubber. So I went in about 3-4mm. Width was around 10-12mm, The point is, is that the rubber can easy slide in and fill the curved edge and create a seal.. I used a brass ring with an extrusion on it, which fitted nicely into the pipe. If you got piping, then work with that first, The pipes take away the air, so there very important. So just make sure you seal everything or it can leak out. I placed a rubber O ring under my metal ring plate thing. And make sure you seal both sides of the MDF plate, or your vac will start to suck the air out of the MDF - and it will slow down the process and make leakages easier and on top of that - you will lose vac pressure sooner. Hope this helps - keep asking Q's - if you need more advice Im here for you..!! Kindest - MM <3

@@allaboutmarquetry Dear "MM" - thank you v much for responding and your insightful comments which are really much appreciated. I think your generosity of spirit in sharing your knowledge is much to be admired! I`m really minded to give this a go but my dimensions are limited to 1m x 0.7m which although much smaller than your table is large enough for my needs (marquetry). So, 2mm para-rubber means a 2mm "hole" or depression in the half-round or even 3mm - 4mm perhaps. So brass ring and the pipe slots into that and the ring into the MDF by the sounds of it. I have a vacuum pump lined up which is probably overkill for the size of this. The most expensive bit is the rubber. So as costing of (in GBP): MDF about 30. Rubber: 75. Pump. 60. I don`t have a half round router so have to pay someone to do that = 50. Workbench to put it on: 20. Total: 235. Compare that with trying to source a marquetry press which is not available except by special order or using some improvised book-binding press. Your needs are no doubt much greater than mine as I am just a hobbyist but am looking to commercialise my work. Sell it in others words. So perhaps 235 or 250 is not a bad bargain. I am sorely tempted! PS - the URL link to your website did not work for me. Is it still live? Thanks again!

Marcus, is bookmatching beyond the scope of our group? There are plenty of good vids around on a basic bookmatch, but I have not been able to find anything reliable on a simple 4-way match and I'm struggling to figure it out on my own. Might this be worth a demonstration video? If it's outside of the group's subject matter I fully understand. Thank you.
@allaboutmarquetry
@allaboutmarquetry 8 ай бұрын
I will definitely look into this. Book matching is part of the advanced veneering skill set. Its generally used for furniture, but I have seen a few clever marquetry people use it as a subtle decorative back drop to their artwork... I will see if I can find some veneer books I have, if not I will order a few packs. Thank you for your input. I will get back to you and the channel ok. :) <3 Grts M <3

The lesson notes are for those who have joined the marquetry course I am doing. However there are a few basic one that are available online. Our Facebook channel (All about Marquetry), has some files you can down load. Failing that find me on Reddit (Marquetry Advice) , Instagram (All about Marquetry) and send me a DM with your email and I can send some over. Thanks =Mm-

Marcus, thanks for posting your Marquetry videos. I have a question. Are you shadow casting veneer that has been glued to a substrate already? if yes , wouldn't the heat from the sand weaken the glue bond.

Thanks for your post and message, So far I have not seen any evidence of this happening. I have used basic wood glue, you could also use resin glues instead. But I would practice first and experiment :) Grts M

If the veneer shrinks from the heat, what do you do with the shrinking parts? Do you do hot sanding first and then cut them? PS: you can only focus on the area where the pan is so that we can see the details better
@allaboutmarquetry
@allaboutmarquetry Жыл бұрын
I put the piece of veneer I want under the window, pencil through with tech pencil and then add on 1mm +- then cut that line. Then I sand shade and if it shrinks, that extra allows for it. It's then simply to recut the veneer to now fit. If you want add a bit extra - but it's just see what works for you. Unless your doing extreme fine tune sand shade lines, most of the time you keep the shading on the area you need for the effect...

I don't like to use scotch tape because it is difficult to remove, I prefer masking tape, although it also leaves traces of adhesive if you put it in the press. I haven't tested the so-called "blue tape" because I can't find it to buy in my country.
