I probably could have done that. At the time I was trying to keep one of the rings as a spare and didn't want to risk snapping it taking it off.

Eventually I'm going to go chop it up and make it a wrap around pipe but the tools I need to do that are almost 2 hours away or at the farm.

I've only been able to take it out a couple times but with some porting and the reeds this thing pulls like a freight train from fairly low in the mid range all the way up to the top. Just from feel and calibrated eyeball I'd say it revs way higher than the 36 ever did!

Luckily my mechanics inspected the bottom end before any work started!

That's not a bad idea. This one was still wet when I put it back in.

Yup, removed the ring and base gasket. It helped a bit but still not happy with the 36. I have a new video coming out in the next week or two on the ultimate Rovan 36. Stay tuned.

It doesn't have to be but it's a lot less messy if it is. Check you squish clearance before you take anything apart and it should be right about 0.5mm. this engine in particular was closer to 1.5mm before I tore it down. Up to a point, the tighter the squish the more compression you'll have. More compression gives you more horsepower. In an upcoming video I will be rebuilding this engine as a fully ported reed valve 38cc.

Short answer: no, yes, yes, and thank you! I couldn't help myself and dug into it with a Dremel to try get some decent power out of it. Two pistons and one pair of rings later I completely gave up on the 36. They're not a good engine... But they do have a good bottom end! As we speak I have a ported 30⁰north 38cc top end waiting for me at the post office.

I can't comment on the 45 since I've never actually run one before. It might help a little bit but depending on your piston clearance the gasket delete might help. Make sure you measure the squish clearance first before you do it though.

If you're looking for more power out of your 45 I know a reputable engine builder that can turn it into a Reed valve engine. I can probably get you in touch with him.

@@BlueSmokeRC well I have a unique application. I have a mini chopper bike that came with a 34cc many years ago, but I am looking to get the 45cc 4 bolt from Fearless RC. I'm rebuilding the bike for my son to rid, the kid already has a Yamaha PW50 that I removed the exhaust restrictor from, so he's used to speed.

If you haven't ordered it yet, don't! In the 5th scale community the Rovan 45 is commonly know as a boat anchor. If they're still in stock the 30⁰n 38cc is a much better option. Be warned though the QC on the heads of those engines can be a little rough but nothing a quick port job with a Dremel and a carbide burr can't clean up. Stay tuned because I'm actually going to be putting a 38 top end on this very engine some time next month.

No, this is a Rovan 32. It has its own laundry list of problems and I'm actually donating the bottom end to a buddy of mine who's an engine builder.

No unfortunately. I did run it after doing the gasket delete and had noticeably better performance but didn't get it on video. The day after I opened the engine back up to do some porting on the transfer ports and ran into the limitations of the head design.

Stay tuned, later this month or next I'll be posting a build video where I turn the 36 into a hybrid 38.

@@BlueSmokeRC when You remove the gasket, You just simply put gasket sealant there right?

Exactly! Thin coat of sealant, tighten the head bolts until they are just snug, then after 24hrs torque them down to spec.

That 30.5 used to absolutely sing! Easily pulled 20k rpm

It's hard to say how much RPM you would gain but the biggest power increase will be from the gasket delete.

@@titiii8135 piston ring expanded into the transfer port window, caught the edge of the window and the piston shattered. Smoothed out and reported the transfer ports, new piston, new ring, 15 minutes into the first power pulls and the piston shattered but in a different spot. If you haven't modified any of your ports you should be good. Pt 2 will be coming out soon on turning my 36 into a bws 38cc hybrid.

You know it! It was right before my birthday too, so that was a bonus! The lights are really cool, I failed to mention that there's 8 cups to allow for recessed or exposed DRLs. I can't wait to get them installed and lit up! Thanks for the sub btw!

Thanks for the sub, unfortunately no I won't but in my case it was fairly straight forward. I was able to fill it with high temp jb weld putty and then filed it down with a die grinder. I would love to be able to show the miraculous recovery but the engine has a chipped piston skirt and it'll need a new piston before I can give it another go.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind for the next one, I'll be building a Rovan/bws hybrid engine in the coming months to go into my other 5th scale.

The way I see is it didn't run when it was sitting in my basement and it still doesn't run now but at least it was a good excuse to practice my case porting. I did manage it get my 32 to fire up last night though so I might be able to get in a couple of wheelies before the snow comes and I gotta switch to studs.

I hope you get it figured out , but look at all the knowledge your gaining. Some guy are afraid to learn the ( hard way) . I love to learn new things , I have a 36 cc that I have done all the bolt on mods I can think of , but come winter, I want to tear it down and port it , never did it before but I'll figure it out ..... I hope .

@@sammiller8497 if you're going to tear it down turf that top end directly in the bin! The rectangular port windows are a recipe for disaster. I'll be trying it myself soon but I've talked to a couple people who have swapped it out with a 30*north 38cc top end with excellent results.

What baffles me is why Rovan went with rectangular transfer ports, I'm going to end up getting a 30*north 38cc top end for this one and put a zenoah 32 top end on my other dead Rovan engine.

@@BlueSmokeRC have a look at the taylor rc engines, they are nuts, and crazy fast once they are broken in. and i agree a strip down vid would be cool, i would be interested in seeing the damage. i hope you get it sorted pal
