This is terrific! Kudos to you, Tom Roberts, for your totally copacetic pianism. Lucky Would be proud! By the way, I leaned the upward chromatic glissando trick from Brooks Kerr, who got it from Luckey!

That ENDING is AMAZING for 1924!!! Check out those harmonies!!! Some of those chords and voicings are like 30 years ahead of their time!

What was Frank doing with his left hand? Also, why was his intro longer than the song!?!?

Clarence Jones is buried about 300 feet from my back yard in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington, Ohio. I visit his grave frequently as I take my daily walks in the cemetery. Clarence was represented very well in 2023 at our Talking Tombstones event where his life story was told in first person by a gentleman dressed in period clothing. I really appreciate you providing his music. Thank you, Frank.

I'm so glad there are a few of us who realize just how special this rag really is...not just as part of Joplin's opus, but for its sheer lyricism, its majesty, its sublimity. I first learned this piece through a guitar transcription which employed a beautiful use of harmonics. This inspired me to want to learn it on the piano. Then, of course, I had to learn many other Joplin rags as well. I'm still on this journey thanks largely to this one piece. I think it's still my favorite. I especially enjoyed your use of thirds in the trio section. This adds to its sonority...beautiful ! This piece will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart. Thank you...

Interesting piece, featuring ideas associated with barrelhouse piano players who recorded from the 1920s and up.

My late uncle was a pianoist for a vaudeville duo, Benny Fields and Blossom Seeley, he also accompanied Judy Garland and Sammy Fain at Sammy’s Songwriters Guild show in NYC He worked with many big name singers too… His name was Eddie Johnson Who nobody actually knows about, because he was out of sight mostly, he was on the stage with Sammy though, I found a video of that show…

This is sometimes awfully out of rhythm. Is that just the mecanism struggling?

I think the rhythm with these piano rolls are controlled by the person's themselves who decide to put it on. Some of Morton's other recordings for piano rolls are struggling rhythm too

Definitely boogie woogie. Rock and roll is a bit of a stretch though.

this is really a fine roll, played on a very good baby grand! Mrs. Baker interpretes the song in an elegant way, and she extends it very cleverly with an interlude in a different key.

Although not Duo-Art, there is an early Welte-Licensee roll that came out around this time called “Polishola”, which if I remember right from the Charles Davis Smith Welte book, was listed as composed by Victor Arden(!) and played by “Ted Oliver”, who I speculate might have been Arden himself moonlighting for Welte. I wonder if that piece has any connection to this one?

Stylistically this sounds to me like an early Frank Banta performance, but I am not sure. It’s pretty awesome!

The unusual title of this piece most likely refers to the patented "rat proof" and "mouse proof" piano pedals and reed organ pedals that some makers widely advertised to help sell their particular brands of piano or reed organ. These pedals were constructed with a box around the pedals on the inside, such that any critter that tried to crawl into the opening created by the pedal in the 'up' position, would not find themselves able to enter the rest of the instrument via that route. (In the case of the piano pedals, I believe a pull-down rod for each pedal exited the top of the box, leading to the piano trapwork; in the case of the reed organ pedals, I think the straps of pedal webbing leading to the exhauster bellows exit the box via similar slots, but haven't seen one in person yet so not positive). So the critter would have to either find another route into the instrument, try to make a nest under the pedals in the box (where it would surely be squished via playing), or just leave! It's too bad not every musical instrument maker bothered to use this 'rat proof' or 'mouse proof' construction, as numerous piano and organ restorers can attest!
