This is good advice. I had the classes in school but no arranging classes. I ended up inventing the wheel and coming up with something that eventually came out to be a three line sketch. Then went on to study Mike Tomaro’s book And Sammy Nestico‘s book on arranging great thing about those books was that they had a CD with them to show how different voicings in different instruments how they sounded so you could create different Tamber. Anyway, I like your stuff it’s really good information and you’re able to, come at it from a point that anybody could understand it. Most of the theory classes I took were people that went way beyond my head and I was barely treading water to be under able to understand it. Great information though.

I think one thing Eric missed, which is surprising since he was a Marine and went to boot camp. Most of the movie was Shawn (sp) trying to break down Devon's ego and get him see he had to be a follower before he could be a leader, just like at boot camp, they broke everyone down to the same level so they could teach and build them all up the same. Once that ego was broken, that's when Shawn took the time to be a leader and teach Devon. I see so many comments putting down Eric (EMC) for his mistakes, and there are others saying they are cultural differences. Yes, he made mistakes and acknowledged and corrected them, and he may not have been exposed to those cultural differences and not known, but he has now been exposed to those cultural differences and has taken more interest in them and done more research to learn more about it. When I was young, I was in Drum Corps style in the northeast and didn't know about the HBCU "show style" of the south. I'll admit, the 1st time I saw the "show style", being used to military precision type, I thought it looked bad and uncoordinated, but it didn't turn me off on it. As I saw more of it, I enjoyed it more and more, and it being non-military precision didn't matter, it was entertaining and they are good musicians. The whole purpose of a band is to entertain your audience, and these bands do that. Just because a person doesn't like the "show style" doesn't mean it is bad, it's just not your preference, that's why there are so many genre's of music out there. Instead of going into it closed minded and thinking everything has to be the way you do it, open your mind up and see it for what it is, good musicians entertaining the way their audience wants it. DCI audience may want the precision, straight lines, everything in unison, HBCU audiences want the flash, the flare, the movement, the high energy and fun, both styles are doing the same thing, giving their audience what they want.

Seventy year old guy in PA... I have a lot to learn from you in particular I want to learn how to get the drum and percussion section to cook. Get a great rhythm to drive the marching band and audience to stand up, clap and listen.

Thanks so much Antoine! As a fellow Atlanta arranger, I love learning from you. In my view, the HBCU style is becoming more prominent - and it's really fun in the stands! I'll be using these tips for my high school band. Thanks! PS. And always care about your woodwinds LOL ;)

Bruh I play a Cannonball with Jody Jazz DV mouthpiece and a Legere Reed. I think it’s a Vandoren in this video though. This was right when I got my horn.
