Thanks for posting this outstanding performance, especially notable for the clarity of the text! I first heard the expression "the fire next time" from my poetry professor (Ted Wood) at M.I.T. in 1962. When I asked the source, he cited a folk song quoting what God told Noah. It was parenthetical to the topic we were discussing, so I simply took it as Biblical, but have neither forgotten, nor checked the exact source since then. Until now, chastened by California burning. The first references I found were to some versions of "Mary Don't You Weep," but I soon got to "I Got a Home in That Rock," with variant titles "God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign" and "I Got a Home in-a Dat Rock". Most web music postings cite the source as a traditional Negro spiritual, Early on, until I found this one just now, the only mention of Harry Burleigh was from Peninsula (San Francisco) Baptist Church (PBC). That was very good for original source, but as much sermon as musical performance. I moved on, as I am looking for versions to purchase for musical listening. I have an early (1929) version by the Carter Family on order, but I notice that composition is credited to A. P. Carter. More to follow, if necessary. One detail that I really appreciate in the present performance is the clarity of "no more water, but fire next time." I believe most, if not all, of the versions I have heard have "the fire." The extra word seems to make it a scramble to get everything to fit. One comment on another version even mentioned that the scramble created a nice rhythmic effect. I agreed to some extent at the time, but I find your clarity unsurpassed. This is a work in process for me, now that I have found my way to Harry Burleigh, so I thank you for your contribution. I will check out more of your posts, but when I saw no comments here, after several years, I wanted to redress that without delay. Vita brevis, ars longa. Better late than never. Aloha.

The music is sensual not melidic. Unfortunately not Harry quality. No offense to the players. They asked to play it. Sounds like screeching noisy movie background music. Jim Crow in Arkansas?? Not so fast on that narrative.

your bench, Roy Jennings. Each nuance seemed to be the exact inflection that would have Harry Burleigh himself, bending from heaven - not to miss one note. Thank you, Mr. Jennings. I’d be privileged to find more of your interpretation of this gift to the world of the spirituals, Harry T. Burleigh. PS. Not finding an instrumental Version, I made my own, for harp. And now, published by Lyon&Healy, 2020. I hope to be in touch with you, Mr. Jennings. I’ve waited 20 yrs for your fine
